SMLStory Edition #12 - Chloe Chuah
I’m a final-year student pursuing a BSc (Hons) in Medical Biotechnology, born and raised on Penang Island. With successful parents in finance and engineering, I have always felt the weight of high expectations. However, my passion for science has always been clear, especially in healthcare. And with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the global race for vaccines, my choice to pursue biotechnology at Sunway University was solidified.?
Background
Growing up, my father would often put on science podcasts whenever we went on road trips in hopes of getting me interested in the field. To his luck, I was fascinated by stories of doctors performing life-saving surgeries and researchers developing new treatments for chronic diseases. In high school, I eagerly joined health sciences projects and volunteered at a nearby hospital. These experiences provided me with a firsthand look at the healthcare system and the various roles within it. As I delved deeper into my studies, I began to discover a dynamic and innovative field that intrigued me even more than traditional healthcare: biotechnology.?
My Journey
After three years in my degree program and gaining some brief experience in the Malaysian biotech market, I’ve come to appreciate the flexibility to pursue careers in commercial or research positions as this degree provides the necessary foundation to thrive in the industry. This versatility would be particularly beneficial for someone still exploring the exact niche they would want to specialize in. In addition to a robust theoretical understanding of scientific principles, the extensive practical experience has also been instrumental in building my confidence and competence in the lab. Given the growing opportunities in this sector, I’m confident that this degree has equipped me with valuable skills to meet evolving demands and make a tangible impact on healthcare.

Challenges
Personally, one of the biggest challenges during my degree program was balancing my academic workload and extracurricular activities. These responsibilities clashed sometimes, and I had to make tough choices about where to focus my energy and attention. I remember countless late nights spent in the library, poring over lectures and research papers, trying to grasp complex concepts to complete due assignments. My constant companion was the fear of falling short and not meeting the expectations I had set for myself. The pressure often felt overwhelming, but despite the hurdles that come with it, the sense of accomplishment I felt after overcoming these challenges was immensely rewarding.?
University Life
University life at Sunway has been vibrant and fulfilling, living up to its reputation as "the most happening campus." As a former committee member of the Sunway Student Ambassadors, I’ve had the privilege of gaining experiences and skills beyond the classroom and laboratory. I’ve had the opportunity to coordinate events, lead teams, and represent the university at diverse functions which have taught me how to manage responsibilities effectively and work collaboratively with others. From academic conferences and career fairs to cultural festivals and community service projects, the array of activities available at Sunway is truly impressive. The dynamic campus life ensures that there is always something exciting happening, keeping students engaged and motivated throughout their studies.?
