SMLStory #17 - Ameena Rana
My Diverse Journey
Growing up in a family that deeply values education, I learned early as a family living abroad, education was my only way forward towards a fulfilled and rewarding life. Her unwavering belief in the importance of learning, supported by our family’s shared determination, has profoundly shaped my outlook on life and my aspirations. Originally from Lahore, Pakistan, I have felt strongly that Asian communities often face limited representation in the fields of drug discovery and other disease related research, as the focus remains centered in Western demographics. I would love to contribute to addressing this imbalance through research and innovation that benefits underrepresented communities.
My decision to pursue biology was catalysed by an inspiring biology teacher during my CIMP pre-university course, Dr Paul Davidson. His ability to make the subject engaging and accessible expanded my view of the possibilities within science. This led me to explore the possibility of majoring in biotechnology at Sunway University. I was fascinated by the endless potential of applying biotechnology across diverse fields, from preserving biodiversity to advancing drug development. Now, as a student in the Medical Biotechnology program at Sunway University’s School of Medical and Life Sciences, I find myself most energized during practical classes. These hands-on sessions allow me to directly apply theoretical knowledge, reinforcing the importance of innovation and exploration in this field.
Aspirations
Looking ahead, my aspirations are both flexible and ambitious. While I hope to work in research and development within the biotechnology industry, I understand that advancing in this field requires deep knowledge and experience. I plan to pursue a master’s degree and ultimately a PhD, enabling me to tackle complex health and science challenges. My ultimate goal is to contribute to reducing disease burdens in impoverished communities, using science to create meaningful, life-changing solutions.

Challenges
The journey hasn’t been without its challenges. The rigorous demands of my course, particularly the stress of constant memorization and exams, were daunting. Eventually, I developed some personalized learning strategies that helped me overcome some of these hurdles. I also draw daily inspiration from my peers—their dedication and drive motivate me to strive for my best. Not to mention science itself offers endless fascination: every answer leads to more questions, keeping the pursuit forever changing and never stationary.
University Life
University life has been a period of growth for me. It has taught me to dream big, to embrace failures as stepping stones, and to trust in my abilities, especially when each person has their own journey and circumstances. No set back can ever be the end unless we let it be— keep moving forward. And I could not forget the friendships I’ve formed here which have been just as impactful as my academic experience. I’ve learned that the support of peers is invaluable, not only in navigating your academic life but also in gaining the courage to be yourself, embracing your flaws and strengths. To new students, I would say this: build strong friendships, speak your mind, and don’t let fear hold you back. Be bold, proactive, and persistent in creating the future you envision for yourself.
