#SmealWeeklyRecap - Location, Location, Location
Thank you to my network for keeping me updated on the business world and other relevant topics. Below are some of the articles collected from my network and our interns' research. The interns also help organize the information. All articles can be viewed at this link. Topics posted this week were articles shared by alumni on business news in their locations or locations of interest.
Featured Alum: Bremmer Kneib (‘07 MBA) SVP, Head of Corporate Banking in PNC’s Denver Market!
Bremmer Kneib (’07 MBA) was previously a PNC corporate banker based in Washington, D.C. However, he will be relocating to Denver, for a promotion to Senior Vice President heading up the Corporate Banking Group for PNC’s Denver market. Bremmer will establish the bank’s business development efforts supporting middle market and large companies. He has been with PNC for over 10 years, and during that time has supported a multitude of clients and industries ranging from family-owned and operated businesses to publicly traded multi-billion dollar corporations. Bremmer's biggest piece of career advice to other Smeal alumni would be to remain open to moving geographically to accelerate your career.
#WE ARE......Everywhere!
Location - Global: If you follow global news, you are definitely hearing about China. Bloomberg reported that the nation is testing an “intelligent highway” that could speed the transformation of the global transportation industry. A little disturbing, CNET said the Chinese government is using surveillance cameras, facial recognition and smart glasses to score people on social behavior, which can lead to punishment. Supply Chain Digital's article reported that Brazil is building a multi-million dollar hyperloop. One article on LinkedIn showcased opportunities in Africa that could make more millionaires!
Location - States: According to a study by United Way in collaboration with 18 states, at a time of rock-bottom joblessness, high corporate profits and a booming stock market; more than 40% of U.S. households cannot pay the basics of a middle-class lifestyle — rent, transportation, child care and a cellphone, according to a new study. Has Alaska succeed in using their state-owned investment fund established using oil revenue as universal basic income? Why is pay rising in Idaho faster than in any other state?
Location - Cities: Our showcase city this week was Denver! In their 2018 State of Downtown, Denver reported a tripled residential population since 2000, downtown employment reached a record-high, and there was an increase in new development, especially in tech. Check out the Philadelphia companies that made the Fortune 500 list and the 10 privileges that Pittsburghers have that the rest of us don't! Why do you think people are leaving San Francisco? One article reports nose-bleed housing prices, sky-high rents and soul-numbing traffic jams.
