Topics for the week!

Real Estate: Like every other industry, the housing market has been stung by the pandemic. Bloomberg reported that the surprise of the spring selling season is that buyers are returning to the housing market to find themselves battling over the few available properties. The biggest trend to develop is in virtual real estate. Bizwomen reported that 6 in 10 home buyers have virtually toured a house in the past two months; one-third haven’t yet but plan to. Interestingly, Bloomberg reported that there's real money behind the blockchain-based real estate describing a virtual game called Genesis City. There has actually been a jump in virtual land values? If you'd like to learn about the value of green buildings, then tune in and listen to Smeal Associate Professor Jiro Yoshida as he presents, "Are Green Buildings Valued Differently in the Market."

Locations Cities: Also due to the current protests, cities have had a dramatic end to social distancing as reported on by the Washington Post. Bizwomen reported on cities that currently offer the best job prospects, and Business Insider shared an article on 20 US cities with great jobs and smaller crowds that they feel will bounce back quickly. In the number 1,2 and 3 spots where Durham, NC; Denver, CO; and Madison, WI. The Washington Post reported that wealthy cities have more coronavirus cases, except in New York where poorer communities were more affected. The Washington Post also asked the question if New York City will be able to lure back tourists and industries as it remains the hardest-hit region and furthest from reaching "phase one."

Locations State: At this time, our states are gradually reopening. However, most have been blindsided by protests against police brutality. This article by The New York Times says states have found themselves ill prepared for the mass protests. The governor of New York says that if you have participated in a protest, act as if you were exposed by notifying people and getting tested. On a positive note, at the beginning of the year, Florida bought the Everglades to prevent oil drilling. California has approved a $3.2B bond for Virgin's $4.8B bullet train to Las Vegas. More recently in Nevada, according to The Verge, Elon Musk's boring company has completed digging a second tunnel underneath the Las Vegas Convention Center marking the end of the first phase of the $52.5 million project to build a “people-mover” system to shuttle visitors from one side of the venue to the other.

Locations Global: As of this morning, The Guardian reported 7,492,236 confirmed cases of the coronavirus with 420,575 deaths and 2,759,470 recoveries. As of now, the U.S. has the most number of deaths and Brazil and the UK have been hit particularly hard. As most people are aware, a 2015 TED Talk by Bill Gates predicted the greatest risk of a global catastrophe in the future would be a highly infectious virus. Countries like Japan, Germany, and the United States have recently unveiled large stimulus plans to recover from the pandemic. In the midst of all of this Hong Kong is facing, what the New Yorker calls, "a different kind of death." Beijing now has the authority to bypass the territory’s own parliament to crack down on any activity that it defines as threatening to its political legitimacy. This article in Bloomberg discusses how the coronavirus is transforming human behavior around the world, changing how we buy and sell.
