Featured Alum:? Emil George ‘14 FIN Product Manager for CARDONE Industries

As a brakes Product Manager for CARDONE Industries, an aftermarket auto manufacturing company, I work as a bridge between all departments of our organization, tying everyone's efforts together to move a project forward. For example, to release new brake calipers into our catalog, I need to have a general understanding of the automotive industry and predict which cars are going to have the most demand for aftermarket parts and when. I then have to work with multiple teams to get the product out to market: Our engineering department to study OEM units and determine feasibility of an aftermarket introduction; our purchasing department to acquire parts and components; our operations teams to build initial inventory; our quality team to ensure compliance; our sales and marketing teams to advertise differentiating features; our forecasting team to ensure that we will build enough inventory to meet future anticipated demand after it is released; and our cataloging and channel management teams to get the parts listed in our catalog and into our customer's hands. It is a leadership role that leans heavily on relationship management, market knowledge, customer support, and most importantly cross-functional communication. What I love about my job is the opportunity to get involved with almost every facet of a manufacturing facility - it is quite fascinating to get a behind the scenes look of the parts that keep our cars moving (or in my case, stopping.) I'm particularly proud of my work here because I know I play a part in saving hard working people money on parts from the car dealership. We take our quality standards seriously and it's very gratifying to be able to provide something to the market that's just as good (and sometimes better) than the original, at a fraction of the price. Our business also serves the environment by enabling drivers to exercise their right to repair the vehicles they purchased (particularly older vehicles that have limited to no support from dealers), instead of having to purchase a new vehicle.?

My advice to Smeal students and alumni is to embrace every department of the organization you work for, and not just your team members. Finance, accounting, supply chain, marketing, risk management, operations, and IT are all critical teams that you should be familiar with, even if you are only working within one of them. Having that familiarity will allow you to get the "big picture" needed for important decisions, and will more importantly make you a more empathetic and effective leader.?

Thanks Cindi Satterfield! Lifelong learning is so critical. I want to learn more about so many things every day, and I hope I am able to share some of that every day, as well. Plus, teaching is often one of the best ways to learn more, I think.
