Alumni Feature – Adam McGaughey ‘15 SC&IS Sales Engineer at APEX Engineered Products

I recently joined APEX Engineered Products as a Sales Engineer and will be expanding our products to new markets. Some of these will include broadening our opportunities through government contracts and reaching out to more Penn State graduates as we are everywhere! APEX currently designs, fabricates, and repairs premium-metals chemical process equipment. Our technologies have improved the designs of heat exchangers, pressure vessels, and vaporizers for various of industries throughout the world. They include renewable energy, general chemical, and fertilizer production, to mention just a few. APEX is one of the few companies globally with a broad understanding of exotic-metal alloys and can fabricate these alloys to deliver exceptional solutions for our customers. One product unique to APEX is our corrugated HXT tube which raises the heat transfer coefficient of a heat exchanger while decreasing maintenance due to reduced fouling in the unit. Empowered by this innovative patent-pending technology, I am excited to enter these new markets while also servicing existing customers with design, communication, and product development. My boss, CEO, and President, Mark Grasso, is also a Penn State grad. He runs APEX with the values of integrity, respect, and hard work. Mark remains in very close touch with the Penn State community, and much like our Nittany Lions, is never afraid to back down from a challenge. Mark still attends nearly every home football game. Notably, APEX will be hosting technical tailgates for 2022 football games to enjoy the Penn State atmosphere and explain our unique technologies to like minds.?Please reach out to me if you would like to added to our contact list.?This is both for current students and people already in the workforce.?Internship and full time positions are available so do not miss out!

In 2015 I graduated with a degree in Supply Chain and Information Systems from the Smeal Business School. Shortly after that, I started working at Airgas, where I remained for six years. I began my career in the operations trainee program and would then move to being a distribution manager. Excelling in this role, I was allowed to work on larger scale projects which led me to be the operations project manager for Airgas East. I was involved in the design, budgeting, and project development for the startup of cryogenic liquid and gas applications from New York to Virginia. Over the past few years in this role, I was able to help start-up different fill processes such as bulk oxygen, hydrogen, and others which are crucial in industries such as healthcare, aerospace, and industrial manufacturing.

My best career tip would be never to be afraid to ask questions, continuously expand your network, and treat everyone with respect. I learned a lot from Penn State, which I still use today, but I have ended up in many other job roles other than Supply Chain. Another tip I would like to share is that if you show up to work everyday and continually improve yourself, others around you will improve as well! Stick to these principles, and you will excel in any role that is handed to you.
