2020 has been an unprecedented year, it has had a profound impact on the world around us including lives and businesses especially the small and medium businesses. At Amazon, we work with lakhs of small businesses including sellers, logistics partners, neighbourhood stores, authors, developers and content creators, and it has been inspiring to see how they have stepped up to this challenge and have played a big part in serving their customers and people at large. A key takeaway for us from these challenging times has been the role technology can play in helping businesses, consumers and the society. Technology and e-commerce have played a crucial role in the revival of the affected businesses and their eventual accelerated growth. The Amazon Impact Report 2020 is our way of showcasing the impact digitization on small and medium businesses. The report brings success stories of these entrepreneurs and small businesses to life. It marks some of the key milestones achieved by lakhs of these SMBs working with Amazon in India.

The biggest highlight of this report is the impact of technology adoption on small businesses – and this can be seen across the board -- from neighbourhood stores to delivery and logistics, to content creation as well as the role of technologies like Cloud, AI and Machine Learning. There is no doubt that technology adoption has picked up pace and the digital economy is on the move.

Here are some of the key insights into the success of over 10 lakh small and medium businesses that work with Amazon in India

1. Indian businesses on Amazon.in continue to grow - 4,152 Indian sellers surpassed INR 1 crore in sales in 2020; the number of crorepati sellers grew 29% YOY

2. Amazon’s B2B marketplace registered 85% YOY growth in sales - Over 3.7 lakh sellers on the B2B marketplace offer more than 20 Cr GST enabled products

3. Amazon Global Selling program is helping take local, global - There are now over 70,000 Indian exporters selling millions of ‘Made in India’ products worldwide across 15 international Amazon websites

4. KDP is enabling Indian authors to self-publish in multiple languages - In the year ending November 30, 2020, Indian authors have cumulatively earned over INR 45 crores through books published on KDP, growing over 2X YOY

5. Amazon is creating new opportunities for entrepreneurs to build their business through delivery and logistics - There are nearly 280 Delivery Service Partners who are operating over 1500 stations across 750 cities

6. Amazon Easy enables assisted shopping for new to e-commerce customers. Over 50,000 local stores across India are today associated with Amazon Easy

7. Alexa enables SMB builders, developers and entrepreneurs to innovate and create voice-first customer experiences. There are over 1 lakh developer from India building for Alexa globally, who have built over 30,000 skills with the Alexa Skills Kit

8. Amazon Web Services (AWS) is helping lakhs of active customers in India to launch and scale their businesses - Since June 2019, Amazon has provided more than USD 1 billion in AWS credits to help startups accelerate their growth and development globally.

The year 2020 has reaffirmed that small and medium businesses are the growth engine of the Indian economy and they have been a fundamental part of our business worldwide and in India. A key takeaway for us amidst these challenging times has been the role technology can play in helping businesses, consumers and the society. We work with lakhs of small businesses including sellers, logistics partners, neighbourhood stores, authors and content creators and it has been inspiring to see how they have stepped up to this challenge and have played a big part in serving their customers and people at large. I couldn’t help but reminisce about the “Perfect Store” program/Shakti Amma app when I went through the full report along with the Amazon Easy Store layout/display window in one of the pics. Hopefully this will help us plan the right assortment even more closer to the customer and deliver great value aided by even better unit economics.
