Here is an excerpt from Go! Reboot Your Career in 90 Days
Leadership evolves through the seasons of your life. When you are building your skills and your network, it can feel like a mountain hike in the summer. There is excitement all along the journey: wildlife to spot, lakes to discover, and flowers in bloom. Although you are fighting gravity up the mountain, you are energized and inspired to forge ahead for the simple pleasure of it. The goal of reaching the summit is more than enough to offset any discomfort you may feel along the way.

Over time, you notice the beauty of a season change into fall, but the journey view is evolving into a colorful display of fall leaves and milder temperatures. You are close enough to the summit that it is easier to keep going then turn back around for a break. You have learned your pace and are continuing to build your endurance. Although you may be moving a little slower, you are making just as much progress, as you are better at wayfinding and knowing your own limits.
Just when it seems you have this whole process figured out, winter sets in. As the temperatures drop and the trail gets covered with snow and ice, there are unforeseen obstacles to your journey. You are looking for a well-paved path to make your climb more tenable. Some days, it feels like you take one step forward,
two steps back, and it can be tempting to turn around and give up when the peak is in sight. After all, you have been working against gravity for many years, if not decades, now, and your reserves are depleted. It seems crazy to quit, since you invested so much into reaching this summit, but you start to wonder if you even climbed the right mountain. This is when burnout is at its highest. The good news about all of these moments is that spring is just around the corner. It will be a time for the ground to thaw and new life to grow. You can take in the view from higher ground and be inspired again for where your journey will take you next. You notice that some of your path onward is going to be aided by gravity, and you have all new vistas to explore. You know that life will never be all downhill, but you can enjoy the support you feel with each step as the ground rises to meet you. ?
This is what it feels like when you have found your mission-aligned career focus. You no longer need to cling to the well-worn paths but can follow your own curiosity and intuition by noticing what energizes you. You find the people you want to take the journey with, and you let yourself be fully seen. It is a place of abundance and opportunity, no longer hampered by the fear of scarcity during the winter. The seasons will always cycle, but don’t forget: You now know that, when the winter comes, it is only a season. There will be new vistas to climb come spring, and it’s okay to rest and recharge.
