Smash That Cake: 13 Ways Healthcare Innovators Can Blow Out Their Own Candles

Smash That Cake: 13 Ways Healthcare Innovators Can Blow Out Their Own Candles

Legacy-DNA turned 13 this year. In fact, today’s our birthday.?

We started out as a small innovation think tank with big plans. Plans to help innovators break free from the sad, stale healthcare commercialization and marketing status quo.

These last 13 years have just flown by. Just when I thought I was long past raising a teenager, here we are ... and I am loving every minute of it.

Ahh, being a teenager has its ups and downs for sure. Growing pains, awkward moments and everyone asking, "what are you going to be when you grow up?". Beyond pimples and rejections, we've had our fair share of success.

We've crushed milestone after milestone in our journey and have created a blueprint. A blueprint that leads to more success than we ever could have imagined.

A walk down memory lane is crazy-inspirational. Actually, it’s mind blowing. I look at how much Legacy-DNA has grown in 13 years and what we’ve learned about innovation. Then I realize that we’ve been guiding health innovators longer than some of today’s most recognizable innovations have existed. You know, the ones we almost can’t function without. Here are a few.

Instagram (Born October 2010)

This is social media’s teen dream. Starting out as a photo-editing and sharing app, Instagram ate all of its veggies as a kid and grew into one of the most prolific communication apps (and starmakers) on the planet.?

Apple iPad (Born 2010)

Initially labeled an expensive, luxury item sitting somewhere between the phone and laptop, the iPad is a prime example of mastering commercialization by understanding product market fit and knowing just how to target those early adopters, who then inspired early majority users, and so on.

Uber (Founded 2009, launched 2011)

Shake up an age-old industry for market dominance? Crazy? Not even a little bit. That’s successful commercialization in high gear. Uber leveraged 4G networks and GPS to?perform an age-old job, making it faster, easier, and more reliable. Many think of Uber as a “technology unicorn.” Who doesn’t love a unicorn??

Tesla Model S (Born 2012)

The Tesla Model S changed the world for consumer access to electric vehicles. While it wasn’t the first commercially available electric vehicle by a longshot (the first was in 1899), it was affordable, appealing and avant-garde. And, many people are crazy about them. Tesla achieved product market fit all the way from early-adopter to late majority. Now to win over the laggards. They deserve a commercialization cake.

Amazon Comprehend Medical (Born 2018)

Let's not forget about health innovations.

As health innovators, we have to do so much more than companies from other industries with an idea to "change the world."

Look at AI as an example. Amazon's AI natural language processing (NLP) system defies stereotypes (and is actually changing the world) by:

  • Reading and extracting medical information from unstructured medical text
  • Scanning and reviewing 10,000+ medical charts per hour
  • Automatically connecting data between sources
  • Matching patients with the right clinical trials and studies (while preserving patient privacy)

This innovation frees up clinicians to do what they need to do and can be life changing for patients. AI deserves two cakes.

?????? 13 Birthday Presents for You!

Wouldn’t it be cool to become that innovation, blow out your own candles and smash a cake?

I didn’t show up just to talk about other innovations in their 'tweens and teens.' Let's celebrate our birthday together with a little something for you. To help you crush your own milestone.

Check out these 13 things to ponder as you build, launch, grow, and scale your big ideas.

  1. Embrace the Intelligence Revolution (AI): AI is like a teenager, too – full of potential but sometimes hard to understand. Just like parenting, stay ahead by adopting AI-driven innovations to scale your business. Every company should have an AI strategy.
  2. Empower employees: Give your employees room to grow, just like a teenager who wants to pick their own clothes. Foster an environment that encourages creativity and rewards innovative ideas.
  3. Actually listen to customers: Stop pretending to listen like a parent who nods while secretly scrolling on their phone. Engage with customers to identify improvement areas and prioritize their needs. Click here to learn more about these strategies.
  4. Imprint "Health & Wellbeing" in the Alpha Generation: Dream up ways to get the young ones started early, like toddlers in yoga pants. Invest in early education that promotes healthy lifestyles and well-being.
  5. Focus on prevention: Don't just put a Band-Aid on a broken arm! Prioritize business models that reinvent “healing that broken arm.” Think beyond sick care. Think: proactive, preventive, and personalization.
  6. Stop hoarding data: Sharing is caring! Share data for collaborative research, improved patient outcomes, and real, sustainable change. Get an inside look.
  7. Care anywhere: Think outside the hospital box! Keep expanding to new care models such as virtual care, home-based care, and community-based care.
  8. Play well with others: You can't do it alone. Rethink the people and companies that might be viable partners – even outside of healthcare. You never know what you can do with even the most unlikely connections.?
  9. Brown. Black. White. Female. Male. LGBT+. Advocate for more equitable healthcare. Because we are a melting pot, not a monoculture. And we all need care. Get insights on your strategy here.
  10. Prepare for the longevity revolution. There will be a time when the average person can expect to live well into their 100s with an opportunity to match healthspan to lifespan.
  11. Build an innovation culture: Turn your company into an incubator that continuously churns out innovations to leapfrog the competition and meet customer needs before they even know they need it.
  12. Prioritize peace of mind: Mental health matters – like a calming lavender-scented candle in a chaotic world. Tap into mental health services and resources for yourself, your team, and the community around you. What's life without peace of mind?!
  13. Sincerely engage patients: Give them an equal seat at the table, like a choose-your-own-adventure story.

???????? BONUS: Smash that cake! Want to look back and realize that your 13 years of growth started or scaled right here? We know you do. That's why we've made a special gift just for you.
