the smartest in the room

the smartest in the room

I remember being told or reading—I can’t remember which—that you should never be the smartest person in the room and that if you do find your Self in that position, seek a new room to be a part of. I don’t fully agree with that statement because, at times, it is important to be the “smartest” in the room to be able to give back, mentor, and help others—but when it comes to personal growth, seek rooms filled with smarter people.

I have found a room where I feel like a kindergartener in a room full of high school seniors, and I’m not going to lie; it’s a little intimidating. This morning I caught up on the conversations in the community and for a moment thought to my Self that I needed to email the founder and tell him I’d gotten in over my head–I’m not on the same level as these brilliant individuals.

During my meditation, I realized that the room that is intimidating me is exactly where I need to be; this room holds the information, people, and challenges to help me reach the next level of personal growth in my Pursuit.

The individuals I’m surrounded by are not from my familiar community of financial advisors and investment professionals. I only know three people, that I’m aware of, and I only recently met two of them. This community is full of strangers who, by society’s metrics, have reached levels of success I have yet to come close to.

Once I realized the discomfort I felt was my ego and that it really highlighted the opportunity for me to expand my universe of knowledge and grow in ways that will help me with my goal of changing 1,000 lives through life planning, continuing to grow my content to help more people discover their authentic lives, and discover more about my Self I knew I had to not only stay, but dive into the community with more time and attention than I have been giving it so far.

Take a look at the rooms you find your Self in.

How many of them are you the smartest in the room?

Is that intentional to be able to give back or is it your ego holding you back from growth?

See you tomorrow and keep pursuing,

JC

How do you seek out these valuable rooms? And how do you know if the discomfort is priming you for growth or... it just might be the wrong room at this time in your journey?
