Whilst e-commerce across Australia is alive & thriving, our country’s most iconic postal & delivery service is choking & is in real danger of grinding to a halt on the brink of this year’s festive season.

Overnight, citing Christmas-like volumes and a heavily under-resourced workforce, AusPost announced a “temporary” pause on all e-parcel pickups, collections & business lodgements for 5 days. Friday is to be the second pause in two weeks.?

The “Amazon Effect”, strikes, backlogs and strained networks are just some of the terms being bandied about. And it appears no company is immune. Whether one of the world’s biggest brands, a well-known Australian retailer, or one of the hundreds & thousands of e-tailers... the big delivery slowdown of 2021 has begun.

Marketing machines across the country are going into overdrive. Big name carriers, national retailers & marketplaces are using TV, radio, newspapers & social media to condition their customers to “Buy Now, so they can Deliver Later”... much later it seems.?

As I write this, I too am getting a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach. A discomfort usually reserved for the big three annual buying events ... my anniversary, my wife’s birthday & Christmas. Until now, this anxiety has always been perfectly spaced out...but here we are again & this time we are facing it in Spring!

Should it have got to this point? Is this a once-in-a-generation phenomenon or just the aftershock of 18 months in & out of lockdowns? Have retailers been putting all their delivery eggs into the one basket for far too long? The answer is a little bit of all of the above.

However, now is not the time to reflect, rather it is the time to act. First-mover advantage will go to innovative business owners, CEO’s & GM’s that pivot quickly. Those with the courage & foresight to challenge their team & processes that have no doubt served them so well...until now.?

Those leaders that understand the value of happy customers & that positive customer experience trumps everything, even saving a dollar or two on freight costs expertly negotiated over the years.
