Smarter Flight Paths: Behind the Scenes of Airline Network Optimisation

What goes into planning the various airline routes we all rely on so much?

Amazing minds like promising PhD student Renan Oliveira, is exploring just that.

2023 has been big for Renan – recognised in the field of airline network optimisation, presenting at the Air Transport World Research Society in Japan and submitting his PhD in August this year.

Renan Oliveira, Griffith University is taking a deep dive into the complex web of Airline Strategic Network Design.

The impact of flight travel on the economic development of many hubs, in particular, regional destinations, is widely understood and accepted, however, Renan has investigated more deeply the various impacts, airline competition, pricing and mergers have on not only the development of airline infrastructure but also on entire airline network routes.

Renan Oliveira with fellow Researchers including Professor Gui Lohmann, Deputy Director of Griffith Institute for Tourism and Research Leader of the future of aviation cluster.

Originally from Brazil, Renan now calls Brisbane and Griffith University’s Nathan Campus home. Renan’s research explores the many network challenges that come with airline development, examining the far-reaching consequences of rapid air travel growth in Brazil’s early 2000s - which lead to bottlenecks and restructuring challenges due to inadequate airport infrastructure.

Renan’s background in engineering and the abundant data available in the transport sector, motivated his deep dive into the complex web of Airlines Strategic Network Design.

Skilled research minds, like Renan's and fellow Griffith University PhD scholars, are eager to collaborate with you, to further explore current industry challenges.

The average traveler, unaware of the detailed strategy behind airline network design, but highly impacted by it.
