??Marketing Magic from Oly's Lab
If you’re on Twitter, then you’ve probably heard of?Trung Phan, a hilarious content creator with viral threads consistently?reaching 20K+ likes and 5M+ views.
Peter Yang?interviewed Trung Phan for his newsletter this week, where they broke down his “Smart Thread and Dumb Memes” barbell strategy that?cracked the code to viral content.
I loved what Trung had to say. So, for this week’s Marketing Magic, I’ve summarized the key takeaways from the interview below.
I’ve also suggested ways for you to easily incorporate his insights into your content strategy, in the form of suggested AI prompts (spot ????) for you to use.
By the way, if you’re still not sold on using AI to boost your content creation process…??
…the time to get onboard is now!! ?? Now, back to business??:
Utilize the "Smart Threads and Dumb Memes" barbell strategy.
Smart threads?take more effort and are more focused on providing useful information to the audience. However, they are key for connecting with important contacts.
Dumb memes?require less effort, but play in a very competitive space. Consistently create dumb memes, and remain top of mind with your audience.
They exist at opposite ends of the spectrum. Invest time into both to really grow your audience.
????: Create a funny and relevant meme for my audience.
Example prompt: [Insert your target audience here] loves [Insert a common interest or theme that resonates with your audience]. Create a funny meme that combines this theme with [Insert a current event or trend] that would be shareable and entertaining for your audience.
Don’t overlook LinkedIn for content creation.
If you can get over how cringe Linkedin can be, it’s a great platform to build on.
LinkedIn has a huge content deficit which indicates more opportunity for recognition and growth. Trung regrets not tapping into LinkedIn earlier on in his journey!
Additionally, Trung says the best way to build on LinkedIn is through repurposing content.
????: Repurpose my content for LinkedIn.

Example prompt: Take [Insert a previously created content format] and tailor it for LinkedIn by [Insert a recommended best practice or tip that suits the platform - such as leveraging long-form and thought-provoking posts, posting videos, or using LinkedIn-specific hashtags and groups] to increase my visibility and engagement on the platform.
Trung treats Twitter like a video game.
In Fortnite, there’s always a new map. On Twitter, there's a new map too - it’s called the main news story of the day. Trung's job is to write the funniest or most insightful thread about that story.
????: Take this main news story and turn it into a funny Twitter post.
Example prompt: Take this [Insert main news story or event] and add a humorous or satirical spin to it that will trigger some laughs and retweets among Twitter users. Keep the tone lighthearted and witty, playing off topical trends and memes, while not making light of serious issues.
Read. A lot.
Trung consumes a lot of content. He wakes up every morning to read. He gets ideas from podcasts and newsletters, Reddit top posts, and Twitter Blue top articles.
If you want to create good content, there is no avoiding this!
????:Summarize this newsletter for me.
Example prompt: Read through this newsletter and summarize the key takeaways in [Insert a recommended word count or length]. Focus on pulling out the main ideas, insights, and actionable recommendations that will be relevant and valuable to your audience.
Create a curiosity gap.
In all his threads, Trung aims to create a curiosity gap, by taking seemingly well-known topics but introducing a big curveball. This is critical and often a recipe for viral posts.
For example, everyone loves salmon sashimi. But did you know that the Japanese didn't eat salmon until the 1990s? This curiosity gap led to 5M+ views for Trung's viral?thread.
????:Create a curiosity gap about this well-known topic.
Example prompt: Everyone knows [Insert a well-known topic or concept] - or do they? Use a clever and engaging introduction that creates a curiosity gap and builds suspense around how you will challenge, explore, or reframe this topic, providing insights that your audience might not have considered before.
There is no better way to become a good content creator than by learning from the greats! In this case, Trung Phan. To wrap up our appreciation for his work, check out his most recent?thread about Rick Rubin & Johnny Cash.
