Smart spaces create happy people

Smart spaces create happy people

When organisations aim to optimise their facilities, there is an understandable focus on digital technologies. There is a danger, however, that in doing so they forget one of the oldest and one of the most important rules of human endeavour—that an organisation is nothing without its people.

At Royal HaskoningDHV, we see smart as a means to achieve a goal. We purposely put the people experience at the centre to create smart and healthy environments that are user-friendly, adaptable and an integrated part of the work process. Projects should not be thought of in terms of cost per square metre, but rather additional benefit – be that financial or organisational – that can be generated per square metre.

From journey to added value

Identifying the need and opportunity of an organisation is all about asking the right questions to the right people. We focus on the organisation, its existing facilities, its ambitions and the problems it would like to solve.

Once our customers' needs are properly defined, we gather relevant data and build a thorough understanding of how the various users work and behave in their environments, whether it is an office, a hospital, a university or a transport hub. These insights are used to translate the organisational values and ambitions into new work processes which are built upon real user experiences.

Smart by design

The consequence of an experience-centric approach is that elements of the building, the facility services as well as the business application work together. To make buildings truly smart by design, you must change the specification as well as the governance in the built process and this is where engineering consultants add real value.

Delivering continuous value

Every building, every company and every person is different. As such Royal HaskoningDHV is able to deploy a unique set of tools that connect these elements to create a custom-made environment for organisations and the people that work within it - now and in the future. As independent consultants, we are technology agnostic advisers and will match the best technology fit for your demand.

A smart building environment is not just about technology or software. It is about creating a connection between information technology, the building and the users, and then using this to increase efficiency and profitability.

Modern offices often look nice but are not a great place to work productively. Probably because quotas dictate too many people on each square meter. A worker should want to come to the office because of the environment which unfortunately isn't the case at many companies. I like your comment "Traditional silos need to be connected because the value is typically delivered through new use cases that focus around user groups and personas, not organisational departments." Would be happy to discuss how we could make this possible together.?

Good article Onno. Rethinking from 'Total Cost' to 'Total Benefit of Ownership' creates a better value proposition.
