After the English team was spotted wearing an Oura smart ring during the training for the Euro 2024 several wonder weather the gadget is worth the investment.
Oura, a Finnish company specializing in wearable technology, released the first smart ring on the market as early as 2015, and since then, several more have come our way. However, Samsung is the first tech giant to follow its lead despite the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office having already granted patents to Apple, Microsoft and Google smart rings.
Samsung release to the market (just available to pre-order so far) of their new Galaxy ring can become the determining element to get the smart rings into the mainstream market. No promises are made so far in this field as the same voices were predicting the commoditisation of virtual reality after apple released his VR headset, Vision Pro, last year.
To provide a balanced perspective on the Galaxy Ring, let's take a closer look at its main strengths and weaknesses.
Positive Characteristics
·?????? Long Battery Life - One of the standout features of the Galaxy Ring is its impressive battery life. It can last up to 7 days on a single charge, which is significantly longer than many smartwatches on the market.
·?????? Waterproof Design - The ring is designed to be waterproof, making it suitable for all-day wear, including during swimming or showering. This enhances its practicality for those with active lifestyles.
·?????? Lightweight and Comfortable - Weighing very little, the Galaxy Ring is extremely light, ensuring that it remains comfortable even during prolonged use. This makes it a preferable option for continuous wear compared to bulkier wrist-worn devices.
·?????? Durable Exterior - The exterior of the ring is made from titanium, a material known for its strength and durability. This ensures that the ring can withstand daily wear and tear.
·?????? Advanced Sensors - The interior of the ring houses three sensors that provide comprehensive health monitoring. These sensors track steps, activity, heart rate, and sleep patterns.
·?????? Ease of Pairing - Pairing the Galaxy Ring with your smartphone is a straightforward process, enhancing user convenience.
·?????? Holistic Health Approach - The ring introduces a new energy score (AI powered) based on various health features, promoting a holistic approach to health and well-being.
·?????? Superior Sleep Tracking - Many users find the ring more comfortable for sleep tracking than a watch, thanks to its lightweight design and lack of a bulky screen.
·?????? Menstrual Cycle Prediction - The ring’s temperature sensor is capable of predicting menstrual cycles, providing valuable insights for female users.

·?????? Smartphone Gesture Control - With some gestures, users can control their smartphone, such as dismissing alarms or taking pictures and videos, adding a layer of convenience.
Negative Characteristics
·?????? Not Female-Friendly Design - Despite its sleek appearance, the Galaxy Ring is criticized for not being particularly female-friendly. Many find it looks big and bulky, which might not appeal to those with smaller hands. Even for men, the ring is relatively thick, which might be uncomfortable for some users, especially those not accustomed to wearing rings.
·?????? Limited Features Compared to Smartwatches - The ring lacks many features that come standard with smartwatches, such as a screen, GPS, and various apps. For $400, some might find it offers less value compared to a smartwatch.
·?????? Price Discrepancy - The price of the Galaxy Ring is significantly higher than that of many fitness bracelets, yet it offers similar functionalities, raising questions about its value for money.
·?????? Sizing Issues - The ring sizes do not match standard ring sizes, necessitating the previous order of a sizing pack to ensure a proper fit, which can be an inconvenience.
·?????? Limited Fitness Application - While the ring is great for tracking activities like running, it falls short for weightlifting (i.e. unwearable) or other non-cardio exercises (i.e. inaccurate recordings), limiting its appeal to a broader fitness audience.
·?????? Battery Life Depends on Size - As with some smartwatches, the battery life of the Galaxy Ring is dependent on its size, which might not be ideal for all users.
·?????? Cannot Replace a Smartwatch - The lack of a screen means that the Galaxy Ring cannot fully replace a smartwatch. Users will still need a smartwatch or phone to check the time, heart rate while running, control music, and access other apps.
Conclusion
Despite the elite football team not being lucky last night, the reality is that it might be perfectly possible that the smart ring has already found its niche market in tracking and enhancing professional sportsman performance. However, the question of whether Samsung will earn the trophy for popularizing this device in the retail market still remains open.
The Galaxy Ring offers a novel approach to health and fitness tracking with its lightweight, durable, and feature-packed design. However, it also comes with its set of drawbacks that should be weighted carefully by a potential purchaser.

8 个月Montserrat RodrÃguez i Riu Thank you for the insightful article. While this is certainly beneficial for Samsung phone users, its appeal may be limited for other Android brands. At ï¿¡399, the ring's price point significantly exceeds that of many mobile devices contributing to Android's 57% global market share. From my perspective, Apple users typically demonstrate a higher propensity for purchasing accessories and ecosystem enhancements. I estimate that 65-70% of the addressable smart ring market is likely on iOS.
