Technology Adoption is the Key for Manufacturing Transformation!
India’s industrial output is having steady growth, August number shows double digit production increase in manufacturing, mining, and energy. This is backed by increasing demand in appliances and consumer electronics which is expected to reach $21 B in 2025. Capacity utilization is back to pre-covid level which needs to be further improved to support the demand.?New industrial parks are coming up with specific vertical focus, contract manufacturing is increasing for the global markets. From a downside point of view, raw material cost has gone up and is putting pressure on the profitability of manufacturers. During my recent plant visits almost all the manufacturing leaders stressed upon the need to reduce operational cost and better resource utilisation. The availability of skilled workforce is another challenge faced by the industry. Optimizing energy consumption seems to be on top of agenda as motors and compressors in plants continue to be the major consumers of power. As a product goes through different operations during production, quality checks are done at each stage which takes lot of resource time and is subject to human errors. Thus, companies are exploring how AI based computer vision solutions can reduce cost of inspection and improve accuracy
Technology adoption is the key for sustainability as it can help in making processes efficient. NASSCOM CoE is working towards bringing manufacturing enterprises and solution providers together to co-create solutions that can help in improving productivity and efficiency. We recently completed 4th Edition of Manufacturing Innovation Challenge (MIC) and till date through MIC, more than 15 large manufacturing companies have received technology solutions to their complex business problems. We have also created first of a kind virtual smart manufacturing competency center (SMCC) that showcases end to end smart Industry 4.0 solutions from technology companies and startups. We are running a program Udyam 4.0 that helps MSMEs to understand the benefit and application of technology to save cost and work with limited resources. Advancement in Industry 4.0 technologies is another focus for us where we bring forward researchers to showcase work to end users.
We look forward to enterprises, technology companies, startups, and academia to join us on the collaboration platform for manufacturing industry. To know more about our programs please write to us at [email protected].
Voice of Industry
Smart Manufacturing – The Voice of Manufacturing!
Anand Laxshmivarahan R, Chief Digital Officer Vedanta Ltd
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about significant change in the way industries and sectors conduct business. Manufacturing industries have faced various unprecedented challenges such as sudden shortage of materials, steep drops in demand and workforce unavailability, all of which accelerated adoption and deployment of more intelligent and smart technologies. By making manufacturing systems smart, productivity has been found to increase by 15-20% due to improved machine utilization and optimized energy usage.?
Challenges associated with digital adoption:
Managing data is hard for many manufacturers, the lack of digital competencies acts as another major roadblock. A report by the National Skills Coalition found that more than 1/3rd of the manufacturers it surveyed have limited or no digital skills, while just 29% possess the advanced skills necessary to be most adaptable to changing technology. Other challenges include:?
Key Strategies:
The three key principles to be kept in mind while building a Smart Manufacturing roadmap for any organization are:
To realize the Smart Manufacturing vision, organizations need to first create a roadmap aligned to the business vision, strategy, and goals. This could include areas wherein digitalization can enable us to realize improved production efficiency, higher volumes, enhanced workforce productivity, along with helping us realize our Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) goals. Specific use cases include asset performance management, hazard detection, optimal process control facilitated by combining optimization and AI/ML technologies, online sales via eCommerce, robotic process automation across enabling function areas and apps that bring in turnaround time reduction and real time tracking.
The second and important part is around building the right organization design and identify people to lead transformation initiatives. It is important to have dedicated digital talent within each function – operations, maintenance, finance, HR etc. Successful transformation initiatives require leadership from business and close partnership with technology and digital organizations. With business teams involved early on and with them leading solution design and ownership, it would also help drive faster adoption and change management once the solution is deployed. A right organization staffed with agile and multi-skilled teams will go a long way in realizing the smart manufacturing vision.
The third and important piece of the puzzle is around competencies and capabilities. A common challenge in transformation programs is there are teams with capabilities and understanding of the business domain, but they lack the breadth of emerging technologies that can solve problems in the business. On the other side, there may teams with deep understanding of the technologies but may lack knowledge of business. An important aspect of the strategy is to first pair people with competencies in business and technology together and over a period nurture competency at the intersection of business/technology within the same individual.
At Vedanta, Project Pratham is transforming manufacturing and enabling across all our businesses with a digital-first approach. At Vedanta, Project Pratham is transforming manufacturing and enabling across all our businesses with a digital-first approach. NASSCOM is already partnering with organizations like us in areas like skilling and competency development through the Future Skills program. We also look forward to partner with NASSCOM CoE across the smart manufacturing initiatives like startup acceleration programs, hackathons, manufacturing challenges and the joint research and problem-solving activities.
