Smart Homes - Are They a Security Risk?

Nearly everyone has at least one smart home device. They are super popular and convenient but they can also pose a security risk. Often the dangers of smart home devices fall under the radar. For example - 75% of people feel some level of distrust about the use of their data. Yet most people are willing to use smart home technology.?

Smart homes are great and convenient, however they also provide a great place for hackers to compromise your systems. It is important to be vigilant about cyber threats whilst also enjoying your smart home.

?Here are some signs you can look out for if you are worried about hackers :?

?

Unexpected behaviour – This is often the first sign that someone has compromised your smart home device. Think lights flickering, thermostat changing etc.??

Strange Sounds – Smart speakers and voice activated assistants have become commonplace in many households. If you start hearing unfamiliar voices or strange sounds from these, it could be a red flag.??

Device Settings Modification – Smart devices cater to your individual preferences, so if you notice unauthorised changes to these settings it could be a sign that a hacker has compromised your device.?

Device inaccessibility – Suddenly finding yourself locked out of your smart home devices could be a sign of hacking. Hackers may change passwords or enable two-factor authentication without your consent.??

New or Unknown Devices on the Network – Regularly review the list of devices connected to your home network. If you spot unfamiliar or unauthorised devices it could be a sign that your network has been breached?

Emails or messaged confirming changes – If you get emails or messages confirming changes that you have not made it is likely a sign of unauthorised access. Take immediate action to secure your account.?

?

As technology makes its way into every aspect of our lives we must take cyber security very seriously. This is especially true when it comes to devices inside our homes. The first step to becoming more vigilant is to be able to recognise the signs.??

?

Remember these devices can be useful and make your life easier, but they also need careful maintenance and protection.??
