SMART GOALS?
Team “Productivity/Velocity” had been defined as one of the KPI goals in past several years, for my teams, until my supervisor asked me two straight questions, when I was creating team GOALSs for my teams, few years back.
?Q1. To Whom it is helping, except yourself? Productivity should not be a team goal. :)
Q2. Do customers have any interest in knowing how much story points you delivered to them? Or they are more interested in knowing the value, you are adding to help them in their business?
?These two questions changed my perspective totally, about defining annual GOALS.
?Estimations & productivity are internal to teams and vary from team to team. This really doesn’t mean anything outside the team. Of course, we cannot negate the importance of measuring productivity, which is certainly required but can be measured separately for planning, monitoring, and controlling projects purposes. But having “Productivity” as Annual KPI Goal really doesn’t help anyone. Here I am mentioning only one example but there might be many more similar to this.
?Then after, before creating annual KPI GOALS, I take the pointers below into consideration.
1.????? If the GOALS are well aligned with my Organization Vision/Goal? and Meaningful to teams?
2.????? If the GOALS are helping my customers in resolving their problems? Making Life Easier? Or Improve Efficiencies?
3.????? If the GOALS are SMART Goals?
4.????? If the GOALS are not limiting my teams learning and growth opportunities?
?Thanks for sparing time in reading this. Pls share your thoughts, what do you consider while defining Goals for your teams, it will help me further in my learnings.

1 年Agree.. Customer excellence is what one should aim at at any level in the organisation be a team member or a leader...this is an ideal situation and in that case no one in the entire system can be deprived of the growth.
