As cities continue to embrace technology, many are leveraging innovative solutions to better support their residents and engage them in the journey toward a smarter, more sustainable future.
The Global GovTech Board, launched at the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2025, is a prime example of how cities around the world are collaborating to redefine digital governance. Led by partners from Berlin and Kyiv, the board aims to foster global innovation and establish universal standards for how governments use technology. Through initiatives focused on cybersecurity, sustainability, and technology procurement, it seeks to address critical challenges and ensure that the benefits of digital transformation are accessible to all citizens globally.
In Detroit, the city's Motor City Tech Bars initiative is another shining example of how technology is being used to directly benefit residents. The City of Detroit 's Department of Innovation and Technology is rolling out eight Tech Bars across the city, where residents can bring in their broken devices – laptops, phones, or other smart devices – for free repairs. The programme, which will be phased over the next year, ensures that at least one Tech Bar will be located in every city council district. This initiative not only addresses digital inclusion but also empowers residents to engage with technology, helping them stay connected in an increasingly digital world.
Meanwhile, the The City of Edinburgh Council is accelerating its smart city ambitions with the introduction of a new security centre. This centralised software is transforming public safety, services, and urban planning by enabling the city council to manage all smart city technologies through a single interface. The move comes as part of Edinburgh's broader smart city strategy, aimed at improving resource management, enhancing public safety, optimising traffic flow, and enabling better city planning. By integrating innovative technology, Edinburgh is offering its residents a safer, more efficient, and well-planned urban environment.
The journey to a smarter city is one that actively includes residents at every step.?It's this message that is core to SmartCitiesWorld 's new TICCCITIES campaign – Technology Innovation for Community-Centric Cities. Through a series of interviews, reports and events, the TICCCITIES campaign is dedicated to shining a light on cities and their partners who are innovating with the community in mind, prioritising equity and inclusivity in their technology strategies, and ensuring that projects are designed to bring benefits to all residents.
We're seeking new supporters of our two TICCCITIES Charters, which lay out best practices and considerations for both cities and their technology partners to follow when undertaking new projects. To become a supporter, or take a more active role in the campaign as an ambassador or sponsor, take a look at the TICCCITIES site today.
