FUNDING FORTUNES
"Your elevator pitch is great… as long as the building is more than 20 floors high."
?FUNDING POINT – SMART CITIES / FUTURE CITIES
The topic of ‘smart cities’ has come up in multiple conversations with different investor candidates.
?This investment opportunity has many definitions which vary widely. I am working to develop a a definition that will support an investment.
?My work is approaching this goal from two directions:
·?????? Reviewing definitions what have been offered up by different studies, experts and consulting groups
·?????? Developing my own definition from the perspective of an opportunity manager
?An excellent technical paper on the topic was published by the Institution of Engineering and Technology titled Smart city indexes, criteria, indicators and rankings: An in-depth investigation and analysis by Chai Keon Toh: March 17, 2022. This paper compared six smart city indexes:
·?????? IMD-SUTC Smart City Index
·?????? AT Kearney Global Cities Index
·?????? EasyPark Cities of the Future Index
·?????? Mori-Foundation Global Power City Index
·?????? Smart EcoCity Index
?ach method for ranking used different collection techniques and different data defined differently that covered:
·?????? Health
·?????? Transport
·?????? People (Living)
·?????? Economy
·?????? Environment
·?????? Governance
·?????? Sustainability
·?????? Digitization/Technology
?Using these methods, the largest cities of the world were surveyed and ranked within an index. Most of the methods favored New York and London. I find this questionable from the standpoint of quality of life. The exception to this think was the IMD-SUTD Smart City Index that favored Singapore, Zurich, Oslo, Taipei and Lausanne. It appears that this approach incorporated the United Nations Human Development Index (HDI) that measures the life expectancy at birth, the expected years of school and the Gross National Income per capita.
?Missing from this analysis are actions to elevate the scores within these indexes. These actions will involve changes in policy, law and regulation, education, funding, taxation, information, and public/private interaction.
?In my work to date, using a rural community as my focus, I have adopted five groups of action:
1.???? Smart Knowledge
2.???? Smart Space
3.???? Smart City
4.???? Smart Economy
5.???? Smart Community
?I will be expanding and extending my work on study of others and taking a fresh approach.?
