Does your brand messaging need a refresh?

Sometimes adding a new color story or logo isn’t enough to refresh brand. It’s important to keep your brand language and messaging consistent. Do you have a strong brand tagline? Many taglines try to say too much. Its best to focus on one idea. Make sure you are making a clear statement. Often taglines can be complicated, underwhelming, and ineffective. Some say it should focus on a benefit, others say it should clearly explain what you do. Regardless of the approach, it should add value to the understanding of what you do for sure. Here are best do’s and don’ts as you develop your new tagline.

  1. Keep it simple. Don’t make people think too hard about what you do.
  2. Keep to 7 words or less.
  3. Think about what gets you emotional when you think about what you do.
  4. Avoid mindless marketing words that say nothing.
  5. Don’t tell a story. While your brand story is important, your tagline is a brand statement.
  6. Don’t explain your offering, instead explain your mission or the results you drive.
  7. Describe who you are in the marketplace. This is a strategy for personal branding especially. You can give yourself a title. America’s #1 Small Business Expert is an example of this.

Once you have a new tagline, then you need to share it everywhere, such as your website header, email, newsletter header, and in your social media profiles.
