8 steps to become a thought leader in your industry
Decide what you want to be known for: In 2007, I decided that I would become America’s #1 Small Business Expert. In 2011, Forbes Magazine named me the #1 women to follow on Twitter.
Focus on a specific channel: I focused my content strategy solely on Twitter for the first two years of building the SmallBizLady brand.
Look for an influencer to model yourself after: Success leaves clues everywhere. Find an unofficial mentor online in your industry and dissect what they did to become a brand.
Remember, you are a brand: If you are going to build your business as an influencer you must be strategic about what you share on social media. You can not share your political opinions or talk negatively about any corporate brands or anyone.
Produce amazing content: Good content always speaks for itself. Make sure you create a variety of content and have a purpose for what you share.
Always use your authentic voice: Once you start partnering with corporate brands, they might try to put words in your mouth. Do not let this happen. Stay true to yourself.
Be relentlessly consistent, producing quality content: Preplan an editorial calendar to stay consistent, work a month ahead, set aside one day a week just to develop content, whether it’s writing, videos, photos or podcasts.
Hold on tight to your dreams: It takes time to build traction online, but if you stay focused on serving a specific target audience with amazing original content, eventually you can become a top expert in your field.
