The SmallBizLady Buzz - Issue 215

How do you select a potential business partner?

While setting up a business is relatively straightforward, finding the right business partner is an entirely different matter. While you might think starting a business with your best friend or spouse is a great idea, there are some important factors that should be considered before entering into a business partnership with anyone.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Why are you going into business with this person?
  • What are their qualifications?
  • What resources or connections are they bringing to the table?
  • Do your personal and business goals align with your potential partner?
  • Do you both have the time, money, and relevant experience to contribute to the business? For example, does one of the partners have competing priorities, such as a young family or aging parents?
  • Who is going to call the shots? Co-presidents will not work; someone needs to be the CEO.
  • How will financial decisions be handled?

Before you go into business with anyone, check their work ethic, ability to compromise, and whether or not they have complimentary skills in areas such as finance, operations, business development or online marketing so they can help grow the business.
