How Do You Earn a Client’s Trust?

To earn trust, it takes a blend of credibility, reliability, relatability and never losing sight of serving your customer.

Credibility?can be built quickly by listening carefully during the discovery process, simply by demonstrating a clear grasp of your client’s goals.

Reliability?is all about your ability to keep your word. You must deliver on time, and on budget, and communicate progress at every step. If an issue comes up, disclose it quickly with a solution. You must never let a customer down.

Relatability?is building rapport and establishing intimacy with a client. Be interested in who your client is as a person. Do they have kids or an amazing hobby like visiting all the baseball parks in America? Are they a dog mom or into volunteer service to fight homelessness. Learn to ask good questions and share information about yourself too.

Serve the Client First.?Focus on selling the solution your client needs. Tell the truth to your customer even if it costs you a contract. Be more interested in serving the client than lining your pockets, and the client will reward you down the line.

Trust is important. If prospective customers and clients trust you, you're more likely to have more productive conversations with them, which can ultimately lead to your customer choosing your services or product.

Melinda - Thanks for sharing these tried and true rules to live by on how to earn a client's trust. Unfortunately, I've noticed that "serve the client first" has been waning lately. Serving the client throughout the entire customer lifecycle is oh-so-important. I've noticed companies (small and big) doubling down on brand awareness + acquisition, while dropping the ball on product/solution delivery and the post acquisition customer experience. This leads to unhappy customers, attrition, and a wildfire of bad reviews or no referrals. Always put the customer first! Your business will flourish if you do.
