The SmallBizLady Buzz - Issue 15

Yep, We’re in a Recession. Now What?

I hate when people tell me obvious information. Yes, we are in a global pandemic induced recession. According to the World Bank, humanity has experienced 14 global recessions since 1870, the last being the financial crisis of 2007 to 2009. This recession has been going on since February 2020 as far as small businesses are concerned. The academic definition of a recession is two quarters back to back of negative economic growth, but to that I say this: If you focus on the fact that we are in a recession, it is all you will see.

I implore you to see all the new opportunities. The world is still waiting on a better mousetrap. They will beat a path to your door no matter where your door is. Many great businesses that are still in existence were started during economic downturns including Proctor & Gamble in 1837, IBM in 1873, Trader Joe’s 1958, FedEx in 1975, MailChimp in 2001, and Square and Uber in 2009. I could go on…..but I think you are starting to see my point. If you are in a pivot, look for unmet needs in the marketplace. Look for something that can be improved upon. Look at what your customers will need in the future, and go build that.

All this recession is doing is making all of us make sure we have real value to offer our customers. It’s time to make strategy decisions, and strategy is about competition. Do you create value for your customers in a way that is not easily copied by the competition? I became the SmallBizLady in 2008, and over the last 12 years became a global brand empowering small businesses. What will your recession comeback story be in 2020?

One option to consider might be to become a government contractor. In a recession, the government spends money to the get the economy rolling again….this week’s feature article is a Q&A interview with Carroll Bernard on how to get started with government contracting.
