Small Things Make A Big Difference

Small Things Make A Big Difference

We recently celebrated Labour Day on the 1st of May, do you value your employees? Is it enough to just reward your employees with a public holiday and think that you made them happy for a day? Organizations think that it cost a lot of money to appreciate and value their employees when in actual fact; it may not even cost a thing or a lot of money. Let's look at how small things can make a big difference to employees in any organization.

  • Praise and celebrate their accomplishments - Employees want to know that they matter and that their work is meaningful and appreciated, so tell them — it costs you absolutely nothing to praise them and you will be rewarded in a priceless way with happy workers who want to stay with you
  • Goodwill Gesture - When an employee does not fall under the purview of the Employment Act and they are required to work on weekends; then the organization can compensate them with a replacement day off.
  • Being Flexible - Giving an employee a little time off to visit their elderly parents or attend to a sick child at home.
  • Showing Care - Sending a fruit basket or care basket when an employee is down with Covid or hospitalized.
  • Small Celebrations - Celebrate the monthly birthdays by hosting a small party with cake once a month and recognizing everyone who was born in that month. Give out 2 movie tickets for employees' birthdays on top of birthday leave.
  • Understanding Different Generations - These days, several generations work side by side. Don’t assume that what matters to Gen X, matters to Millennials. Find out what seemingly small things are important to all your colleagues and try to provide for them as much as possible.?

Organizations should know and realize by now that valuing employees is not always tied to spending a lot of money. By rewarding employees with small things such as praising them personally and sincerely for jobs well done; treating employees to a festival lunch or birthday celebrations now and then, organizations will be rewarded with employees who truly want to work for your organization and will do the best at their jobs.
