Networking – the necessary evil that every young professional woman must endure.

If you’re a young woman with aspirations of taking over the world (or at least – your industry), then building a strong professional network is an absolute must. And let’s be honest – networking isn’t easy… and sometimes, it can be a bit nerve-wracking.

Fear not! For you’ve stumbled upon the right place. Take it from me – networking isn’t everyone’s God-given talent. But there are places to go, events to attend, and ways to hone-in on your networking capabilities. We always get better with a bit of practice.

Building a strong professional network is critical for young women to advance their careers and achieve their goals. So, grab a cup of coffee, put on your power suit (or pajamas, I certainly don’t judge), and let’s get to work.

Attend industry events

Ah, networking events – the perfect opportunity for young professionals to make connections, exchange business cards, and awkwardly try to balance a plate of appetizers while shaking hands. For the young professional woman, networking events can be especially daunting, complete with sports analogies and discussions about golf handicaps…

However, with a little preparation and some charm, you can network with the best of them. Attend conferences, seminars, and networking events related to your industry – whatever it may be! These kind of events offer great opportunities to meet new people and connect with other professionals. Because let’s face it, as a young woman in the professional world, we need all the allies we can get! And what better way to make those allies than by showing up to industry events and making connections along the way.

Use social media

Luckily, social media has made it easier than ever to connect with others in your industry without having to leave the comfort of your sweatpants and messy bun. Use platforms like LinkedIn to connect with other professionals and stay up to date with industry news and trends. Join LinkedIn groups and participate in discussions. Don’t be afraid to slide into DMs like a pro. But instead of trying to get a date, you’re trying to get a job or make a connection. Be confident, witty, and charming – just like you would be on a first date.

Follow people who inspire you and engage with their content. Comment on their posts, share their articles, and tag them in relevant conversations. Join online groups or forums related to your industry. This is a great way to connect with like-minded individuals who are passionate about the same things as you.

Volunteer

Volunteering for industry-related events or non-profit organizations can help you meet new people and develop valuable skills. Not to mention, it’s a perfect opportunity for young professionals to make a difference in their community and give back to those in need. Typically while volunteering, you’ll be working alongside other like-minded individuals who share your passion for helping others.

Just be sure to avoid using words like “synergy” and “disruptive innovation” while you’re volunteering, and resist the urge to do a powerpoint presentation on your volunteer experience. Instead, focus on being friendly, helpful, and willing to get your hands dirty. Who knows – you may even make a connection that leads to your dream job.

Connect with alumni

As always – some tips translate easier than others. IF it’s an option for you, you could reach out to alumni from your college or university who are working in your field of interest. Alumni networks can be valuable resources for job opportunities and mentorship.

But well… let’s be real here – not everyone can afford to go to college, and that’s totally okay. You have your own unique set of skills and experiences to bring to the table and alumni don’t make or break your future. As a young professional woman forging your own path, you’re free to network with anyone and everyone who shares your interests and passions. So go forth and connect with the world, my friend!

Remember, building a strong professional network takes time and effort. It can be equal parts daunting and exhilarating. Listen more than you talk, bring plenty of business cards, and don’t be afraid to follow up with your new connections after the event. Be proactive, stay engaged, and be genuine in your interactions with others. With the right strategies and mindset, you can build a strong network that can help you achieve your career goals.
