High emotional quotient (EQ) enhances social interactions including small talk, by enabling individuals to perceive, manage, control, and communicate emotions effectively. People with a high EQ excel in connecting with others through empathetic engagement.
Three key behaviors distinguish those with high EQ in small talk:
1. Validation of Others
Individuals with high EQ listen actively, responding in a way that demonstrates understanding without diverting the conversation to their own experiences. They use paraphrasing and follow-up questions to convey that they value the other person's input.
2. Mirroring
High EQ individuals unconsciously imitate the behavior of those they engage with. This may involve matching tone of voice or facial expressions, fostering a sense of rapport and connection.
3. Open Nonverbal Language
Body language plays a crucial role, and people with high EQ exhibit open postures, frequent nodding, and responsive nonverbal cues such as "uh-huh" and "I see." This ability to understand and prioritize others' needs proves beneficial, particularly in small talk with strangers.
StrengthmakerZ Academy believes that these 3 behaviors of validation, mirroring, and open nonverbal language are not only keys to transformational small talks but also to our pursuit of success.
