Small slice of your own skill

Small slice of your own skill

Hello,

I took my toddler to a show at the Cape Town College of Magic a few weeks ago, but we both know he was just a front. I’ve loved magic ever since I was his age, and it was interesting to feel both the wonder and the internal conflict of experiencing it again as an adult – wanting to believe what I was seeing, but almost reflexively trying to work out how they did it. I found a neat resolution for myself after the show, when we had a chance to explore the campus. In one corner, a 9-year-old juggled three balls in one hand. In another, a display case showed a metal cuff with a series of thin rods and springs attached to a folded playing card, some magician’s tools from yesteryear. And honestly, that was the magic, right there: skill and technology, tied together by showmanship.

This month, we’re talking about a small slice of your own skill, technology and showmanship. What can (and should) you do with the new technologies available to you, and how do you reach out to your clients?

Artificial intelligence is the closest we’ve come to waving a wand and having the dishes do themselves. But can you play in the space freely, with all the laws and regulations arising to control it? Do you need to comply with the EU AI Act?

If anything showed us the dangers of a poorly worded command, it’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (the one with Mickey Mouse, not Nicholas Cage). And yet generative AI is still training itself on buckets of other peoples’ water, causing potential AI copyright infringements in gaming.

The Poetic Edda mentions an Old Norse rune, brimrunar, which could protect ships at sea, provided they were positioned in the right places. Security technologies are a bit more advanced now, but it’s still sometimes tricky knowing how to implement ISO 27001.

Have you noticed how most Western fantasy has spells written in Latin? You’d be forgiven for thinking there’s no practical difference in cultures. But there is in the real world, and it's important to know how to engage properly with others, like doing business in the Middle East.

Harry Potter never fully describes how owls find the people they’re delivering mail to, but their accuracy leads me to question their privacy controls. The question of how you reach your customers is full of obstacles and opportunities, especially when direct marketing in the USA.?

I’ve never known if a witch’s familiar was supposed to be magical itself, or just a pet. Either way, it must have shed on her cloaks. We firmly believe that artificial intelligence is here to stay, so we’d better learn how to get it (in-)house-trained. Join our webinar on AI for in-house lawyers.

Once again, there’s a lot to write about, and only so many places on the Quidditch team. Have a look at our Insights page to read about everything we couldn’t fit into this month’s newsletter.

30 April 2024: Workshop | Access to information – the essentials

Access to information (ATI) held by public and private bodies is one of the most important information rights in the information society. Unless there are good reasons, people should have access to information. Having access to information is just as important as protecting information. Most organisations know that they need a PAIA manual, but that’s as far as goes for them when it comes to access to information. Giving effect to the right of access to information is so much more than a PAIA manual, and it’s important for organisations to know what the ATI essentials are.

Join our workshop, where we unpack the key ATI essentials to help your organisation on its way to compliance.
