Small Shifts, Big Energy Changes: How to Move from Overwhelm to Flow

Small Shifts, Big Energy Changes: How to Move from Overwhelm to Flow

Have you ever faced a daunting task—one so big that even breaking it into smaller steps doesn’t help? You know what needs to be done, but you can’t seem to move forward. The overwhelm takes over, and instead of making progress, you find yourself frozen.

I’ve been there. And I’ve discovered that the way forward isn’t always through the task itself. Sometimes, the best way to get unstuck is to shift your energy first.

The Power of Small Acts

Growing up, my room was my cozy nest—blankets tangled, books stacked in precarious towers, a quiet sanctuary of my own. My parents, however, kept their bedroom impeccably neat. My mother made the bed every single morning, no exceptions. As a child, I didn’t see the point. But as an adult, I learned something unexpected: making the bed made me feel organized, capable, and in control—even when I wasn’t.

In my college dorm, every inch counted. An unmade bed made the whole space feel chaotic. Later, in my first apartments, I found that if my bed was made, I didn’t mind if I was behind on tidying papers or books. That small act gave me a sense of clarity, a shift in energy that made everything else feel more doable.

The same principle applies to life. When we’re stuck, sometimes the best thing we can do isn’t forcing ourselves through resistance but instead taking one simple action that shifts how we feel. Washing dishes, taking a walk, journaling—any act that brings a sense of order and calm can ripple into the rest of our day, making the big things feel easier.

Finding What Works for You

Not every small act works for every person. When I started coaching, I suggested bed-making to everyone—until I realized that for some, it was tied to childhood struggles and triggered resentment instead of ease. The key is finding your shift—the thing that brings you calm, clarity, or momentum.

Ask yourself:

  • What small thing makes me feel calm, capable, or grounded?
  • What can I do right now that requires no resistance?
  • What creates a sense of order or peace in my space, and therefore in me?

Start there. Take one small step. And notice how the energy moves.
