Small Plate - Start Up Advice to a Graphic Designer, Wanting to Know How to Launch

Posted by JuJuan Buford @JSBUFORD

 Hello Ms. Daffie Duck,

It was a pleasure meeting with you last week. You are intellectually curious, industrious, and very sober minded. All traits that will serve you well in business. A couple things I'd encourage you to consider.

  1.  Beta test, or test your product viability. Go out and secure your first 10 paying clients & charge just below market rates. Make two or three origination videos. Just you being you, post it on FB & the Gram, talking about how excited you are to be launching your business.
  2.  "Make who do you know", your favorite phrase. In the beginning it is about securing sales, but also building your network of prospective business owners as quickly as possible. Start asking everyone you know, with a pulse, who do you know who could benefit by learning about my services. Acquiring a client results in a bill being paid, developing a network of prospective clients builds your business, and doing everything you can to transform your clients into very happy clients, builds your brand.
  3.  Work, work, work. In the beginning your not going to get compensated for everything you do. Build knowing that one day you'll be compensated, for things you no longer have to do. Writers, write. A lot of bad material. The writing is an exercise that sharpens them and allows them to gain insight into what the market wants.

The C stuff never sees the light of day. It just serves as creative fodder.

The B stuff might see the light of day, but it doesn't get publicized. It's busy work, test out the waters work, don't allow yourself to become obscure work.

The A material, is for the book that will be promoted, publicized, and invested in.

Your A material is for your clients. Create outlines, illustrations, flyers, logos,.... keep creating content, that reflects what the market is clamoring for, and experiment, learn to anticipate what's coming.

After you've completed Steps 1 & 2, you have a fledgling business. Having a LLC on paper, means nothing. It's like social media experts who get a lot likes, but no clients. Don't get caught up in the vanity of others. Employ the strategy I shared with you during our sit down to build your network. Let's revisit this discussion in a couple weeks.
