This small piece of brick has been fascinating Japanese consumers, both young and old since it was sold in Japan in 1962 through distributors. In 1978, the company formally registered and changed its company name to LEGO Japan Ltd. LEGO Japan is a member of the LEGO Group with its head office in Denmark. Inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow is our mission and we continue to work towards our ambition of reaching 300 million children globally by the year 2032. An important year for us as this is when the LEGO turns 100.

Operating from our office in Minato-ku, Tokyo, a team of close to 50 employees from sales, marketing and operations work tirelessly to move the LEGO Group closer to reach our ambition. With their hard work and determination, LEGO Japan has been one of the fastest growing markets for the LEGO Group in APAC. Over the last few years, the team has rapidly expanded to include new capabilities such as PR, digital marketing and eCommerce. This is a true testament to the company’s investment and belief that LEGO Japan will continue to be a key market with great growth potential.

This success doesn’t come easy and the team put in many hours focusing on making sure that we listen to our consumers & customers feedback and taking actions to improve our current processes or systems. Strong collaboration with colleagues who are based in LEGO hubs in Singapore and Denmark is also another vital link to our success. While it may seem like an unusual way of working in Japan, it is common for employees to speak openly within their teams with their managers as well as cross-functionally in LEGO Japan. The leaders believe in empowering their team members to make decisions; instead of getting involved in all the discussions. This shows the level of trust and respect that the leaders have for their teams and their capabilities.

Although we work hard, we certainly cannot forget to have fun in our daily work. In the LEGO Japan office, it is bright and colourful. Bricks can be seen around the office. Although we have standard working hours, employees have the autonomy to work from home when they need. This flexibility reflects the culture of trust that leaders have in their employees. Working in a global organisation means that there could be conference calls outside regular working hours. Having a flexible work arrangement allows our employees to be more effective and efficient in their daily work.
With more different sales channels such as LEGO Certified stores and eCommerce stores opening, the team in Japan is working fast and hard to try to keep up with consumer and customer demands.
