SMALL MILESTONES OVERCOME INSURMOUNTABLE OBSTACLES

HOW INSPIRATIONAL LEADERS STAY COMMITTED TO THEIR GOALS

True grit is refusing to give up when the goal seems insurmountable, MySuccessBlueprint.us

This is it! A new year for a new you. This is the year where you’ll set those New Year’s resolutions and stick to them. You’ve said that every year for as long as you can remember, but this time you mean it. You’re finally going to learn how to be the leader you’ve always wanted to be. You start working on the growth plan to restart your business. That book you’ve wanted to write will no longer be just a dream. You’re finally going to lose 20 pounds and quit smoking. No longer will you put off spending quality time with your family or traveling to that tropical island. Enough is enough! This is your year to get serious about making changes and pursuing those things that will bring you fulfillment and happiness.

You shoot off from the starting blocks feeling strong and passionate. This isn’t so bad! In fact, you’re enjoying this newfound discipline and the thrill of accomplishment. You can do this! This really will be your year, the one where you finally crush all of those goals you’ve set for yourself.

And then it happens.

One morning, your alarm goes off before the sun comes up, and you hit snooze without thinking twice. Your bed is so warm, and, besides, you’ve done so great so far. You’ve earned some time off from training for that race.

The bank doesn’t buy into your growth plan.

Your partner isn’t pulling their own weight.

You’ve had a day from the pits of hell and you don’t feel like resisting the siren call of a cigarette and your favorite drink.

You start missing family dinners because you absolutely cannot lose the sale. And then the next deadline pops up…

Obstacle after obstacle lodge themselves in your path, slowing you and distracting from your goal until you stop and look around. It feels like you’re no longer making progress, and your goal is a far-off blip in the distance. Any fire of motivation you had in the beginning disintegrates.

One day off from the gym becomes two, three, four, and then weeks. You completely forget about that leadership course you were so excited to sign up for. A single cigarette to calm your nerves becomes two packs.

You tell yourself it’s okay, that everyone has days off, and that you’ll try again in the morning. But then tomorrow comes and your motivation to change is nowhere to be seen. Suddenly, December rolls around again, and, shockingly, you didn’t achieve any of the goals you had set for yourself at the beginning of the year.

If this describes your life, know that you aren’t alone. We’re a little over halfway through the first month of the year. Seventy percent of people that made a new year’s resolution have already given up on the “wish.” Of the 30% remaining, eighty- five percent will abandon the declared intention for growth by mid -February.

Those statistics aren’t too promising, are they? It’s just more proof that setting goals aren’t a piece of cake, but staying committed to them is not.

Identify who you are and what you do and join the two for the fantasy of the new you, MySuccessBlueprint.us, #EricMiller

So, what can you do to beat the odds? How can you keep your commitment to your goals and your self-improvement strong throughout this year? How can you ultimately achieve what you set out to do in the new year?

 SET MILESTONES.

A big reason why so many people abandon their goals is that they don’t see improvement. Distant goals never seem to get any closer, and the frustration at our lack of progress convinces them that the effort simply isn’t worth it. Why go through the discomfort and discipline of long-term goals, when they might not be achieved?

Setting smaller goals and milestones allow us to see how far we’ve traveled over time. Instead of allowing the big goal to overwhelm you, keep your eye on the prize and take incremental steps to achieve it.

When we hit a milestone, we have tangible proof that we haven’t been standing still, after all, and the effort put forth has been meaningful and worthwhile.

This has made a dramatic difference in my own life. Being able to see the progress I was making helped keep my frustration and anxiety at bay. Instead of throwing in the towel, I was able to keep going, knowing that every step I took moved me closer and closer to my ultimate goal.

For me this past year, it was realizing after 7 months of practicing Spanish each day that I could understand simple videos and podcasts in the language. Keeping up with my Ab workouts have fallen prey to much of what you describe here. If I look at the two things - the style of learning - one with online videos on my own (abs) and the other with an app that has gamification and automated reinforcement baked into respond to me - I see how much the coach/teacher/method really matters! Very thought-provoking articles always!

Such great info Eric. I really like the Recalibrate - Restart - Thrive model. And as one of my favorite movie characters once said, "Never tell me the odds!"
