A Small Guide to Creating Compelling Subject Lines

A Small Guide to Creating Compelling Subject Lines

How many times do you receive creative emailers and think to yourself, 'Oh, this is nice' or 'This really caught my eye'? Probably every day! To speak with facts, 90% of the people open their email by looking at the subject line first. The content writers behind killer subject lines understand what really makes you click through an email. But sadly, not every writer can do that.?

The key to mastering this art is learning how to write irresistible subject lines for emails. A catchy subject line is not only helpful for content marketers and social media managers, but it plays a significant role in your day-to-day emails as well. In my first blog on Linkedin, I have compiled some result-driven tips that you can use to make your email subject line super compelling. Read on to learn what these are!

  • Be Informative?

A subject line should be informative enough to give readers an idea of what the email says. A vague subject line can lead to complications and misinterpretation, which you may never want. Make sure to craft a concise, informative, and thought-provoking subject line that gives the right idea to the audience. Example of an informative subject line: "Your Monthly Financial Report: September 2023 Insights".

  • Make It Short

Writing long subject lines is a big no when creating subject lines for emails. A long subject line is not even visible from your mobile notification. It is advised to keep your subject line between 30 to 50 characters only. This would help the reader scan through your subject line within seconds. Example of a short subject line: "Quick follow-up on our meeting."

  • Limit Punctuation?

There is a rule of thumb for the use of punctuation in the email subject line. The rule recommends the use of upto three punctuation in a subject line. Too much punctuation can land your email directly in the spam section of the email. Make sure not to use more than three punctuations ever in the future.?

  • Go for Action-Oriented Words

This tip goes perfectly well for content marketers or brands that send daily or weekly emails to their customers. The action-oriented words like Join, Grow, Improve, Try, Accomplish, etc. create a sense of excitement for the reader. It pushes them to open the mail to check the type of action they are supposed to take. An example of such a subject line is "Join Us Today for Instant Benefits!".

  • Prioritise Personalisation?

Personalisation is everything you need to get more clicks on your mail. When your subject line speaks directly to the audience, it creates a lasting impact. You can add a touch of personalisation to the subject, like using the recipient's name, interest, location, etc. This establishes a rapport with the reader. Example of personalisation: "Rahul, Your 20% Discount Awaits!".

In a Nutshell?

Sending and receiving emails are an essential part of our professional operations. But we all can agree to the fact that a subject line can make all the difference. A clickable subject line should be informative, short, and crisp, must have less punctuation but more action-oriented words, and finally evoke a sense of personalisation. Keeping all these things in mind, one can easily craft an irresistible subject line that increases email click-through rates.?

If you know someone who has to send a lot of emails every day, make sure you share this blog with them. Let every professional possess this handy skill to their best benefit.
