Small gesture with the biggest impact

Made my morning coffee run at the usual Starbucks near my place which is attached to a hospital and an old folks home.

Ran in and ordered my usual. While waiting, I saw a old grandma, likely in her 70s staring at the fridge and asking the barista about their breakfast specials etc. She would be either a patient at the hospital or someone living in the old folks home upstairs, this can be seen from the attire she is wearing.

Grandma: I don’t drink coffee or tea.

What can I drink?

Barista: Hot chocolate

Grandma: How much is it?

Barista: RM13 (sounded like RM30 actually)

Grandma: Even for a small one?

Barista: Yes

Grandma hesitated and said she will come back tomorrow. But in her eyes, she was staring at the menu. I walked closer to her and gently held her arm.

Me: Grandma, I have a free drink, why not you redeem it ?

Grandma: No No it’s ok.

(Can see she was quite shy to take it)

Me: It’s ok popo, you help me drink it or else it will expire soon you know? (I lied)

Grandma: ok ok, I will have a hot chocolate then

Me to Barista: Hot chocolate for grandma please, less sweet if possible and low fat milk.

Grandma: ?? Wow! Phone can buy hot chocolate. That’s so amazing

Me: yes grandma (while smiling)

Please be careful when you take your hot choc because it’s very very hot ok? I will run now cause I need to head to a meeting.
