Small Changes, Big Differences – A Mantra for Leadership Development
The kanji character, “密”, was voted to best describe the mood in Japan in 2020; it carries the notion of denseness, crowdedness, and proximity, so, an understandable choice.
With an almost imperceptible change to the bottom portion of the character, from “密” to “蜜”, it becomes the word for “Honey”, which carries the more uplifting notion of healing, golden, and lasting.
And so is often the case in leadership development, where small behavioral adjustments can lead to metamorphosis. In follow-up meetings after Coaching Training, for example, candidates commonly report palpable shifts in their people just from practicing deeper listening with them.
Making personal changes is like any other business decisions, it involves time, energy, opportunity cost and risks; return on investment is a key consideration, therefore, it is only cogent that leaders should get strategic with how to be putting a little in to get a lot out!
In summary, it’s not about having a dense list of development goals, it’s about cultivating an authentic self that is healing, golden and lasting, one small strategic change at a time.
