Small Business Owners Day 3/29

Small Business Owners Day is March 29th. It feels a little strange celebrating small business during such tough times. But perhaps that’s exactly what is needed.

Owning a small business is a lot like riding a roller coaster. There are highs and lows, twists and turns. You ride because of the joy, believing everything will be okay at the end. But the fact is, you never really know how things will turn out, and you jump in anyway.

Having worked for someone else since I was in 8th grade, I’ve known what it’s like to be an employee. For many years, I was the only one in my family of 5 siblings who didn’t run their own business. I was happy being an entrepreneur on the inside of a company versus forging out on my own. For more than 25 years, I worked for someone else, finding innovative solutions and interesting opportunities to build their brands, tell their stories and improve their experiences. I was completely invested in building their business until I realized that I had done all that I could within the organization and the desire to help others was too great to remain in the same place.

At first, I wasn’t sure about starting a business and being out on my own. I had two teenagers, two large dogs and a new house that I had recently built. Why would I leave a good job to hop on a roller coaster? (It’s a fact that I don’t like real roller coasters - never have!) When you know your purpose, there is this overwhelming desire to share it with others. I knew I had a passion for branding, marketing, and communications. I realized the impact a consistent, coordinated strategy can have on an organization as well as its customers.  An effective strategy implemented well can transform a business. There is also this thrill that overcomes me when I partner with clients, guiding their organizations and outlining a path that takes advantage of their unique qualities, moving their brand forward. It’s rewarding to see their businesses transform into a high functioning organization who consistently creates exceptional experiences for their employees and customers. It’s that feeling of personal fulfillment that makes you jump on that ride even when you know you don’t like roller coasters.

Working hard for something we don't care about is called stress; working hard for something we love is called passion.
~ Simon Sinek

Before the pandemic hit, The Purpose Partners’ business was going great. But because I consult with individuals and organizations, when their livelihood starts to suffer, it has a trickle effect. Our business suffers as well. It’s like that unexpected dip along the roller coaster. You know, that one that makes you feel a bit weak in the stomach.

If there is one thing that helps me keep a positive outlook, it’s the community spirit that I’ve seen as times have gotten increasingly tough. It’s wonderful to see the support pouring out for all of the local restaurants. They’ve been hit hard with shelter in place orders. But as you think about how you can support small businesses, I encourage you to to think about a couple of things: 1) Remember that some big brands are also owned by individuals. My brother happens to own a Shell gas station. Although it’s a large, well known brand, the local stations are owned by individuals who support their family and give back to the community on a regular basis. 2) Think beyond restaurants when you are considering who you’ll support. There are barbers, florists, farmers, bookstores, tour companies, tutors, bike shops, music stores, contractors and other service businesses who could also benefit from your business. I encourage you to find ways to offer your support to a variety of small businesses.

On #SmallBusinessOwners day, and for the days ahead, you can help small businesses know that this is not the end of their ride. Thank you for your support. #SmallBusinessStrong
