I recently had the pleasure of being interviewed by Jane Denton for the iNews "How I Manage My Money" feature. Shout out to PR expert Anica Broms for helping me secure this opportunity. While initially it felt like a simple conversation about my personal finances, it brought up a multitude of thoughts and reflections on the topic of money mindset and financial wellbeing.
Money has always been a somewhat private matter for me, as I am sure it is for many of you. Yet, as I delved into the interview and shared my experiences, I realised that the realities of running a small business, and a home, often benefit from being transparent about our financial journeys. There's definitely a vulnerability in opening up about financial matters but it is important to do so particularly if we are to counteract the social media noise of "how to build a 6-figure business" and other markers of success that we are told we "should" be aspiring to.
The reality is, money management isn't always a glamorous affair. It requires harmony of income and expenses, spending and investing wisely, living in the moment and planning for the future—all while navigating the unpredictable twists and turns of entrepreneurship. In fact it is a real juggling act.
What struck me most during the interview was the reminder that there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Each of us has our own unique circumstances, aspirations, and values that shape our financial decisions. For many small business owners, including me, money isn't the primary motivator for entrepreneurship. However, what is important is a state of financial wellbeing to sustain both our businesses and ourselves. Yet, the pressure to present a picture-perfect image of success can lead to a negative money mindset and feelings of shame, guilt and failure. Not the primary emotions of positive wellbeing, I think you'll agree!
Fostering a healthy relationship with money that aligns with our values, and supports our business goals, is key to having a flourishing business. So I invite you to delve beneath the surface of any financial anxieties. Embrace the messy reality of money management and approach it with compassion and curiosity. By regularly shining a light on our financial triumphs and challenges we can learn to navigate the path to success on our own terms with confidence and resilience.

10 个月It's clear from the article that you've always had a strong sense of managing your money. Brilliant! I want to address those of us who have not been so - ahem- organized with our money. When (not if) one realizes that changes need to happen, it's common to feel overwhelmed. Budgeting as a new experience can be frustrating. "I'm not an idiot. Why can't I make these changes work?" Like any new skill, when we start budgeting we will be TERRIBLE at it. Accept this reality and understand that our abilities will improve over time. But it will take time. And maybe a bit of humility. ;)

10 个月Good articles Susannah. I think a key money belief for me has been my realisation about wealth. It isn't earning a massive income, it's about earning more than we spend, and having an enjoyable life. So it's about focussing on spending, and asking "How much (or little) do I need to spend in order to have a lifestyle that I love?" I'm surprised at how little I need to spend and still have a lifestyle I love. And because I'm spending less I don't need to earn as much, which gives me more time to enjoy life.
