Hi Friends and Fellow Business Owners,

My word for this week is “engagement.”

One of the best and most eye-opening business books I read in the last decade was The Crisis of Disengagement by Andrew Sherman. Although it was written in 2017, the lessons, examples, and advice are even more applicable today.

In the book, Andrew writes about disengaged employees who show up to work but would rather be somewhere else and the actively disengaged employees who want to take the rest of the team with them!

The solution? Get rid of your actively disengaged employees, let the actively engaged employees work their magic, and focus your attention and effort on turning disengaged employees into engaged employees. That’s when the ordinary becomes extraordinary.

And who doesn’t love extraordinary?

As business owners and leaders, being actively involved in our daily operations isn't just about oversight; it's about creating an environment where innovation and excellence are the norms, not the exceptions.

Daily engagement allows us to stay ahead of market trends. It also ensures our teams feel supported, motivated, and accountable. Actively engaged leaders will proactively shape the future through consistent action and decision-making.

What are you waiting for? There’s a whole world waiting for you to engage with it!

Brian

1. Are Your Employees Engaged?

Chances are they’re not. According to a recent Gallup survey on employee engagement, in 2023, employees felt more detached from their jobs, with “less clear expectations, lower levels of satisfaction with their organization, and less connection to its mission or purpose” than they did four years ago.

And most didn’t feel that someone at work cared about them as a person.

In fact, only 33% of U.S. workers were engaged in their work.Read more to learn why employees are so disengaged and if you can fix it.?

2. How Curious Are You?

Curiosity may have “killed the cat,” but it actually is a key characteristic of successful entrepreneurs.

One successful business owner told my friend Rieva Lesonsky, “Curiosity is the driver behind good conversation, uncovering problems, and having a growth mindset. All three of those qualities are vital to entrepreneurship. Combining curiosity with action is a potent mixture that leads to success.”

He also explains how curiosity unlocks his creativity and explains how to run a business “with a curiosity-driven mindset.”

A 4th, related idea I’d add: proactivity. If you can proactively stay on top of changes in the marketing space, you’re taking the first step toward ensuring your business doesn’t get left behind!
