Small Business Barbie? After months of bubblegum pink-saturated anticipation, the Barbie movie opened last week. The unprecedented, absolutely out-of-control marketing around the movie could have ended up a disorganized and undisciplined mess, but, incredibly, it has been widely touted as a resounding success. The more creative and unexpected the partnership, the more likely folks were to marvel at the “more is more” approach to partnerships, cross-promotions, and collabs. I’d been wondering how this whole effort came to be when I came across this fantastic Fast Company article on the Barbie marketing machine. I truly hope someone teaches a business class on this someday because no matter what your business does, there are so many lessons here for how to build (or rebuild!) a brand that really resonates. Bottom line: Start early, work hard, think big. Sound familiar?

No Time for an MBA? Speaking of business classes, do you ever wonder if you should have gotten an MBA? It’s a big investment of time and money and most small business owners don’t have enough of either. As it happens, NPR’s Planet Money has a new series out this summer called "Planet Money Goes To Business School.” Host Robert Smith translates the top skills you'll learn in an MBA program into a fun and easily digestible podcast format featuring interviews with entrepreneurs and advice from Columbia Business School professor Angela Lee Perfect beach listening, don’t you think? You can check out the first episode here.?

AI for Small Business: With all the hype around AI and ChatGPT, in particular, you may think it has little practical application for small businesses. Think again. The ability to leverage AI to do some of the heavy lifting around content creation, email marketing, and all kinds of research makes it ideal for overwhelmed businesses short on staff and resources. And while you might think you’re too busy to figure out how to use it, a little time invested up front could save you many hours and dollars in the future. Here’s how to get started with five ways to use ChatGPT in your small business.?

How about one more? You may think you work for yourself, but it is the customer who signs your paycheck.

I agree. Collaboration is indeed so important Jeanette Mulvey. A business might not be able to partner with as many brands as the Barbie movie, but it can still team up strategically with others in the field. This could mean making products together, holding events together, or promoting each other on social media.
