A CRISIS TO TACKLE?

Most of India's cityscapes are often marred by plastic waste-choked drains and toxic fumes from roaring traffic, greying the sky. This intimidating visual can make individuals feel helpless, frustrated or insignificant in the larger scheme.

Surveys show most Indians believe environmental safety is the administration's responsibility Yes, largely administration has to play a major role but at the same time we cannot downplay an individual’s role.

India's environmental crisis demands immediate attention.

The country generates 54 million tonnes of plastic waste annually (Central Pollution Control Board, 2020), while Delhi's air pollution reduces life expectancy by 10-15 years (Indian Institute of Technology, 2019).

Moreover, a staggering 70% of India's water resources are contaminated (National Institute of Hydrology, 2018). It is a daunting backdrop.

But, what's often overlooked is the significant role individual choices play in perpetuating these issues. For instance, opting for privately-owned vehicles over public transport contributes to Delhi's toxic air, while seemingly harmless purchases – from single-use plastics to fast fashion – fuel the plastic waste epidemic. Similarly, individual consumption patterns, such as buying bottled water and packaged goods, exacerbate water contamination and plastic waste.

INDIVIDUAL ACTION DOES MATTER

However, by making conscious personal choices – using public transport, choosing eco-friendly products, and adopting sustainable lifestyles – individuals can significantly mitigate these problems, collectively driving meaningful change and protecting this crisis.

Ten-year-old Licypriya Kangujam from Manipur inspired thousands to make eco-friendly choices.

Bengaluru's "Plastic-Free Bangalore" initiative collected over 100 tonnes of plastic waste since 2018.

Assam's Jadav Payeng single-handedly created 550 hectares of forest. These are extraordinary stories of human will.

As individuals, our actions may seem insignificant, but collectively, we hold the power to drive remarkable change. Imagine the transformative impact when 1.3 billion people unite: a 10% reduction in energy consumption, 50% of Indian households composting food waste, and 100 million individuals opting for public transport daily.

NO CLIMATE ACTION IS SMALL

The math is simple: small actions x 1.3 billion people = transformative change.

Integrating eco-friendly habits into our daily lives is not just a moral obligation; it's a survival imperative.

As Indians, we have the power to create a better future – one small step at a time.

By incorporating simple habits into our daily routine, such as carrying reusable water bottles and coffee mugs, using product made from crop waste or renewable resources, upgrading to energy-efficient appliances and LED bulbs, opting for public transport, walking, or cycling, choosing local, seasonal produce, and supporting eco-friendly brands and products, we can collectively drive change.

As James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, aptly puts it – "All big things come from small beginnings."
