A Small Act

A Small Act

I was jogging with my dog on a hot summer day. As usual, my dog did her business. When I was ready to pick up after her, that's when I realized that I have lost the bags while jogging. I was a mile away from home in each direction.

My first question is: What are my options?

  1. Going back to trace my lost bags - not sure I can find them
  2. Running back to home and then come back - but what if someone steps onto her "droppings"
  3. Knocking on a stranger's door and asking for a plastic bag - but that can be awkward!

Quickly I was able to choose my best option. I knocked on the door. After I explained what I needed, it took the home owner quite a while to come back with a plastic bag. She said she was trying to make sure there is no hole on the bag. It seemed to be trivial, but I was very touched by her thoughtfulness.

I thought about the many times I had seen people leave trash behind after events. I couldn't understand what made people leave their waste behind - it's ok if one forgets occasionally.

A great leader starts with a great person. An exceptional leader does the right thing even when nobody is watching. I hope we can all pick up after ourselves (or our furry friends).

I just had this happen the other day. The many doorbell cameras likely caught me waving my arms as I somehow tried to indicate to homeowners that I would indeed return to pick up my dog’s poop. After my walk, I did indeed, drive back over and pick up the poop. And yes, it’s all about character and doing the right thing. Both as you said, are traits of an ex exceptional leader. Now if we can just determine a way not to lose poop bags on our journey….
