SLT05- 'Career Path- Entrepreneurship v/s Jobs'

A bird flies out of cage, feels on top of the world. As time passes the feeling of freedom fades away and even the freedom looks like a bigger cage. People- both in Business and Jobs consider them-self caught-up in the cage and constantly aspire freedom. Choosing between either of career path is one of the most important decision in your life so choose it carefully.

We are in a new world of booming economies (More jobs than ever in history) & a micro-entrepreneurship revolution called ‘Startups’ (Endless business opportunities) which is changing the way startups or jobs are seen today. It is a constant paradoxical thought which runs through many budding adults to sail either of the ship. Let’s find out more about which one should we board...

Which is better ‘Job or business’?- Both have their own advantages & demerits but as they say- ‘Grass always looks greener on the other side’- both lures people from other side and practically this known fact doesn’t stop human curiosity to find out if its really greener.

Having said that, in this article you’ll find critical review of both side and their possible impact but before we proceed- please cross check your written Goals (Exercise from article SLT01- Know yourself). This exercise will not only help you to decide what to choose but also will show you the way to excel into them.

Let’s understand the difference in between Entrepreneurship & Job-

People in Job, dreaming to do business; define that doing business is like being a Lion- Free, dominating, out in the world, territorial winner, hunt for food when he wants.

People in Business, dreaming to do corporate job; define that doing job is like being a Lion- Free, dominating, in the office, territorial winner, get the food regularly and but have to devote time.

Either way- Both are Lion and can’t live without hustle. Now looking at your own goals, you have to decided where is worth spending your time & energy.

In business- you can make multiple houses across the globe with luxurious lifestyle but the flip side in Job is, that You don’t lose your houses by losing a job but business has endless outcome possibilities.

In this Self-Learning Tool (SLT05) to choose either of the career path, let’s delve into which way should we go-

Define Purpose- This is the first step to choosing a career. After understanding the know how of both; think of your own goals and review which way is more aligned with them. Either of the ways will take you to your dream destinations, provided how hard you work for it.

Identify scale- Both for Entrepreneurship & Job, you need to visualize the future scale from now (As long as you wish to work) and make lower than real aspirations. Any result greater than expected will increase your happiness & will give you fulfillment. Follow below 5 W’s chart studied in school; for identifying scale-

Where to Start- In Entrepreneurship- only focus on getting first sale, rest will follow and in Job- focus on winning the interviewer.

Not every Job worker is entrepreneur but every entrepreneur is a Job worker, sometime working for many roles at once. The best way to begin a journey is to ‘Take the first step’.

FAILURE is everywhere, so is SUCCESS- I have sailed both ships of Entrepreneurship & Jobs for long enough to distinguish both. However, for reference of this article I rely on my interaction with people on both end to describe them and found that those people who are passionately inclined towards either side and get constant excitement, always favored their choice.

The meaning of success & failure is changing along with changing marketplace. Only a decade ago success stories were filled with 2 leagues, A.- Barely educated/ dropout v/s B. Educated people & the likes of Ambani, Adani, Modi, Marwadis & Gujratis were compared with Govt jobs and people used to prefer Govt jobs for their sense of security. Gone are the days when we think of life in that terms. Today all in educated space you have likes of Indira Nooyi, Sundar Pichai, Satya Nadella, Ajaypal Singh, Rajiv Suri to change corporate dynamics etc.. v/s Flipkart, Amazon, Nearby, CarDekho, policy bazaar, urban ladder, Paytm, Ola etc to change startup landscape and make worldwide big organizations, where like minded people are pursuing career and gaining success.

Even though world is full of success stories, not all who tried, got taste of success and but those who didn’t try- Let’s leave them, they are busy thinking.

If anything is worth doing, do it by all your heart- Buddha

Understand the changing demographics- Do you like to use slang very often, we have a business for you- Roadies, AIB type or if you want to work for us, come act in TVF.

Traditional demographics were Age, Gender, Buying capacity, Geography etc.. which has evolved in Passion, shared beliefs, Interest, Common goal etc… Both business & Jobs are heavily impacted with changing demographics so understand them properly before stepping into any ship.

Avoid common mistakes people make while choosing Career Path-

Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” - Confucius

Please refer below key principles of many successful people in the world who tried both-

1. Start today (A small action is better than 1000 great intentions)

2. Trust your instincts (They always tell you what is right)

3. Don’t do/decide it alone (Find like minded people/ make Imaginary Friends?* )

4. Predict future & tech changes around you (Learn from reading/News/Internet)

5. Keep customer/employer relevance in mind (Why someone need your services)

6. Be action oriented (Failing after try is better then not trying; you can be good at both)

7. Start with keeping end in mind (Visualize Future)

8. If you are willing to pay for it, there are others who do (Applicable for both).
