The Slow Newsletter
Good afternoon. Welcome back to Tortoise’s weekly Slow Newsletter.
Sticking with the story - this week’s Slow Newscast
At Tortoise, we pride ourselves on dedication to a story.?
More than a year after we released our podcast series Left to die , we returned to our series for a special episode.?
Last June 200 civilians found themselves abandoned and trapped in a hotel in Mozambique under siege by violent extremists. Within weeks the story faded from the media, but in this week’s Slow Newscast we remained true to our promise that at Tortoise we will stick with the story. Basia Cummings continued to unpack the traumas and the long lasting effects of the Amarula siege.?
With the perspective of a year passed, we asked: what happened next? Listen back to the episode here .
Caroline Criado Perez podcast - Privacy and the gender gap
Could your period tracking data be used against you??
On previous episodes of Caroline Critado Perez’s podcast series Visible Women, she has discussed the need for more data on women and female bodies.?
Designing things for the ‘default male’ and a lack of research on gender gaps throughout society has proved fatal for women. However, by filling the gender data gap we like to think that we may be able to alleviate these dangers.?

But this week’s episode asks: what happens when this data is used for harm rather than good?
In light of the overturn of Roe vs Wade, Caroline discusses the risks that period tracking , location data, and other health related data collection can cause for women. It is, what she calls, the “insidious consequence you might not have thought of.”
