Slow down, turn up, build habit

The best advice comes at random times.

You just need to be listening.

This piece from a few weeks ago was gold.

I was having lunch with a friend, Dean.

He used to be a personal trainer, so I was asking about starting a weight training programme.

“What exercises do I start?”

“Do I need supplements?”

“Machines versus free weights?”

He said, “Just start - build a habit and then optimise.”

He also said 90% of the people he trained eventually gave up.

They all started with grand plans and never saw them through.

So he reiterated “No grand plans - just habit.”

So there I was, lifting my 7KG dumbbells, next to 60-year-old women lifting more!

But after two weeks, I could lift a bit more.

I’ve stuck to the habit.

Habit over inspiration (or even planning).

We’ve embedded 100 marketing A-Players with global brands.

So, we have some pretty great insights into what makes a successful remote team member.

There are many traits.

But one I know Dean would approve of is that the best people turn up every day.

They make things better by building a habit of iterative improvement.

Sounds easy?

It’s one of the hardest things to do in marketing because everyone wants the silver bullet, the tactic that will suddenly start driving a ton of leads.

But great marketers know it takes time

You build the right habits.

You assess.

You iterate.

And in six months, you have ridiculous results.

But so many marketers are chasing around trying new things, being swayed by the latest trends, and never getting results.

Dean would say “Slow down, turn up, build habit.”
