Slow Down To Speed Up
As I approach graduation, I began to reflect on my past 4 years at Miami University. Though we have had our ups and downs, I wouldn't trade these past years for anything. Miami has provided me with life-long friends, brilliant professors, and memories that made Oxford, Ohio become a special and irreplaceable spot in my heart.
If I could travel back in time and give my freshman year self one piece of advice I would say "slow down to speed up". I have regrettably spent countless hours focusing on the logistics of getting to graduation, securing an internship, job, etc. When in reality I wish I go back and slow down and reflect on "how do I see myself in 5 years? 10?" That view of oneself is critical in day-to-day decision making. It will also help to solidify personal and professional career choices. Personally, I was too focused on the labels of getting an internship and was not thinking about what that specific opportunity will provide for me, and how I can use that to leverage myself against others. Even now, as I continue in my job search I am worried about my fellow peers perspectives on me if I graduate without a job lined up. When in reality, there are many students every year that graduate unemployed and turn out just fine. I believe it is important to take time and find a job that motivates you each and every day and pushes you to be a better version of yourself. I want to choose a company just as much as they choose me.
This advice can also be targeted at any incoming college freshman. It is okay to not know what exactly you want to do after graduation. Matter of fact, the unconventional pathways tend to be the most interesting. Stick to what you're passionate about and make sure not to settle for less. Life will throw roadblocks at you and test the way that you react. As long as you're strong in who you are and what you want, you can pass any of these tests. Be sure to stop and smell the roses because in the blink of an eye these 4 years will flash by.
One of my favorite quotes is by Nicholas Sparks, "Strange, what being forced to slow down could do to a person". We live in a fast-paced society but every once in a while it is important to take time to pay attention to details and enjoy those little moments.
