Slow down to speed up.

This is my final article of 2023 and I'd like to say a huge thank you to each of you for reading my articles or watching the videos and a warm welcome to all those that have recently signed up and who connected with me at the Cairns Chamber of Commerce lunch.

The focus of today is slowing down to speed up as the more people I speak to, the more common it is that the pace of life we operate at and volume of things being juggled, can gradually weigh you down.?

Quite often we speak of trying to attain the best work life balance. But even within that process, it lends itself to an under tone that work itself is not ‘balanced’ and that it is in the way of living life.

With this in mind, it doesn’t matter how much yoga you do, you may end up still feeling the overwhelm and pressure the moment you are back in your work space as it’s how you have programmed yourself to perceive work.

A big indicator of how you personally are doing is the response you receive from others and the level of your teams commitment and performance in their roles.

This is because in any leadership position, it starts with you and how you show up.

Based on the 2023 State of the Global Workplace report by Gallup, in regional areas of Australia 2 thirds of teams are not engaged. 41% of this is influenced by the environment and culture with a focus on lack of communication skills by their managers. What this means is that you personally have a substantial impact on the satisfaction of those in your team in their roles.

The full report can be found here: https://www.gallup.com/workplace/349484/state-of-the-global-workplace.aspx

We are in the lead up to Christmas and the end of the year and for those that are feeling a higher volume of pressure, deadlines for yourself along with supporting your team to achieve what they need to, this is for you.

When you are overloaded and finishing each day exhausted and just wanting to ‘get through’, then doing it all again the next day, what is happening is the compound effect of stress and pressure.

You may survive the next couple of weeks but your patience levels may be lower and you may not have energy or time for self-care, to invest in a present way with friends and family or to give to your team from a place of strength.

You are potentially worn down and losing focus and attention to detail. This is the path to burn out which takes a long time to recover from.

Sometimes the New Year reset can be seen as cliched however, for me personally, I view it as a natural time to close off and mark the end of one cycle.

It is a time to review where you are and if you are on track. If this sounds good to you and you are getting ready to think about how to recharge yourself to lead into 2024 with strength, internal calm, energy and contentment…these next few reflection questions are for you:

  • Have you finished this year how you wanted to?
  • What worked well?
  • What would you do differently?
  • Are you the leader you want to be?
  • Do you treat others and communicate with them in the best way to enable them to feel empowered and engaged?
  • What do you want to achieve in 2024?
  • Who do you need to become to do this?
  • What daily habits would support this?
  • How do you want to feel in general?
  • What is and isn’t in your control?
  • Are you clear on the direction you are going in? When you are, everything you do contributes to this and you are in full alignment, this is what carries you forward.
  • What do you need to do from this point to work towards finishing this year well and starting strong in 2024?
