The slow days
Part of a series of articles discussing my prgress of setting up and running a business

The slow days

I am back with my third article documenting my progress on how my analytics company is developing, covering the end of March and into April 2020. As expected, Coronavirus has had a significant effect on my business. However, let me start by thanking friends and family who have been very supportive during this time.

If I am being honest though I had expected that the business early on would have some slow days, and I did plan accordingly (I just never thought the issue would be anything like what has occurred). In the end things are going well, I am in a lot better position than most people and I am very hopeful for the future.

Coronavirus Update

Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 the pipeline of contracts I had lined up either got cancelled (losing 21 days) or postponed (62 days put on hold for now). This is unfortunate but completely understandable given the current circumstances. My hope is that the two contracts that are just postponed do become live again in the future. I have kept in contact with my customers and they are also hopeful that more opportunities will come out soon (including the possibility of one starting in May).

I have taken some measures to make sure whilst this crisis is occurring (at least in the short term) I can keep the business going. This includes a mortgage holiday for three months and signing on for Job seekers allowance (a minor amount but my National insurance Stamp gets paid whilst I am claiming). I also have had some money coming in during April from work in March. I have also done a full financial analysis of how long I can keep the business going without any work coming in. In the meantime, I continue to look for opportunities even minor ones.

Keeping myself busy

I have kept myself very busy, doing several activities to push my business forward, and develop myself.

I supported BuddyHub on a grant application including identifying a suitable grant application writer, and doing a review of the application and writing the risk section. I am BuddyHub’s Principal Analytical Scientist and Data Advisor, a part time role I undertake; BuddyHub are looking to alleviate loneliness in older people. if you want to know more about BuddyHub visit https://www.buddyhub.co.uk/. I am also advising a few companies on cyber security issues.

I finished my webpage and it looks very good if I do say so myself https://www.daniel-tilley-analytic-solutions.co.uk/, though a friend has suggested I add in a couple of case studies. The aim of my webpage though is (like my LinkedIn pages) essentially a way for potential customers to see what I have done and how to contact me.

I completed my Radian Create course on how to run a business (see my Radian Create post on LinkedIn https://www.dhirubhai.net/posts/daniel-tilley-analytic-solutions_network-eagle-lab-activity-6638917999845748736-yeIB -regarding the post I made about the first day) . Radian Create have also assigned me a mentor to help support me in mine and my company’s development. Radian Create support local businesses in their development, more information about Radian Create can be found here https://www.radian.co.uk/test-2/.

I attended a couple of events, virtually at the Royal Academy of Engineering, including a grant application writing workshop and a cohort meeting to discuss issues we were all facing with our work and companies. I am also a member of the M3 Job club which meets every Friday and we have been having meetings on

  • Networking (how best to Network given the current crisis)
  • Introduction to Goal Mapping (a shortened version of the workshop I attended in March)
  • Who Moved My Cheese? (covering the book of the same name-and the truths that can be learned from it)
  • Your Voice Your Power (knowing the power of your own voice and how to feel powerful before important meetings)

More than anything I think I was grateful for these sessions to see other people and just chat and learn.

I continue to attend toastmasters (https://www.toastmasters.org/, vrtual meetings) to improve my speaking, I am now taking on more roles with them including being an evaluator (evaluating others talks-this is very good to learn active listening) and next week I will be taking on the role of timekeeper (measuring the time for all speakers, and giving them signals in terms of how much time they have left). I have been assigned a mentor at Toastmasters, and I have set a date for my first speech (an ice breaker talking about ‘Who I am’).  There were also a couple of special toastmasters sessions I attended including one on the benefits of mentorship (very useful) and another on improvisation (great fun).

During this crisis I have reached out to my friends and family to make sure everyone is OK, enjoyed some of the sunshine we have had and took a few days off over Easter to rest. Finally I continue on my Open University course looking at Finance for Non-Financial Managers ( I really need to finish that soon ??). That is, it for this month I hope when I write my next article, I have more optimistic news for you. Stay safe, stay well and check on your family, friends and neighbors on a regular basis.
