Prakash : Divya, Wonderful to have you on board the Slogcity Podcast. A Honour and a pleasure having you as a guest. So lets just straight of a jump into it. Tell me about Visual Thinking and Storyboarding. What is this Visual Storytelling? And how is it having an impact in the modern remote working world.?
Divya: Its so wonderful connecting back with you. I think its been close to two decades. I have such great memories of working with you back in my first job.
So my background has been primarily in HR business partnering and Talent management. And in 2012 I had to go to the US because of my husbands job and thats when I decided to invest in myself and got certified as an executive coach.
So I went to a 9-month certification program and I was just exploring I had no plans to become an entrepreneur. I was just investing in myself and I decided to go down that route to expand my skills and little else. I know that I would start doing that work more professionally as a coach and I started my coaching career in the USA as I started to work with clients, both individuals and teams. I discovered something about myself, that I was a very visual.
I am rather a visual thinker and when people would share their story line or challenges or things that they were grappling with a visual was emerging in my mind, you know, as we were having those conversations and I Call myself not really drawing but the being able to capture some of the anchors or the more important points in the form of a metaphors or icons or just being able to place in front of my client to say is this a picture of what you are thinking about or some of these metaphors which might help someone to change their Direction to Propel to move forward to make better decisions and that entire conversation was in the form of storyboard, which is actually what I do now.
Storyboarding comes from the world of Disney. Walt Disney was the first person who started with the work of storyboarding. Infact the Disneyland came up because of storyboarding. The entire strategic plan of Disneyland was put together as a storyboard. The idea is to see that there is a progression of a conversation and the progression of different themes of different decisions and Choice points that each of us make together. When they all come together that becomes a storyboard and you know, you kind of start to make sense. But if you look at just one frame as a standalone it does not convey any story. But, when you string it together, then you kind of see something bigger. So I decided to bring it back into the world of the work that I do as a coach & as a facilitator and thats whats called visual facilitation.
