SLIDE 10: ADV TACCOMMS IV - COMMUNITY RESEARCH ETHICS

The research world is equipped with ethical practice guidelines. As such, the rights of people are considered significantly and especially as it relates to participation in actual research. The ethical boundaries are placed to protect from harms that observation and recording might cause. It is well and just that the parameters exist and that they escalate as needed within exhaustive research efforts with such as boards and committees. The ethics boards and committees collaborate to assure protections are afforded and that the rights of human subjects are sustained.

A critical element within ethics inquiries and participatory research with human subjects is perhaps most essentially about respect. The guidelines of successful community participatory engagement are found within the stringent efforts to repel harms, invasive energies, and/or inaccuracies. The moving parts of research in community are its stakeholders as well as its research subjects!

Naturally, it is DK’s position to support all forms of human protection including participatory research. That said, when the respect is not included in a vast system of protections, it becomes relegated to ineffectiveness and worse anyway. Hence, RESPECT is the code of the street and the science of communication’s greatest ethical champion (Wolfgang & Ferracutti, 1926; 1999; Josephson, 2018).

The Patrol Operator is also a human subject as are all of the human subjects that they interview and connect with in community. The information shared and the energies of cooperation and synergy may abound by way of the participatory research mantra especially perhaps wherever Respect remains deeply and keenly entrenched. The job is a scientific foray and everyone and everything is evidentiary!
